SCHOOL BOARD ELECTIONS: Nominations have closed for school board elections, which will take place on Sunday, Nov. 3 (with advance polls on Oct. 27). Voters will cast two ballots — for the chair of their local school board and a commissioner who will represent their district. Only people registered on the electoral list of an English school board can vote. To check if you are on the list, call Elections Quebec at 1-888-353-2846. Voters do not have to be parents or have children in the school system. A parent whose child is or has been admitted to an English school board should already be registered on the board’s electoral list but should confirm their status. Parents with a child currently in a French school service centre cannot vote in English board elections. However, anglophones and francophones who previously sent their children to French schools but who now want to vote in English board elections can choose to register on the electoral list of their local English school board. People who do not have children can choose to vote at their local English board.

EDUCATION AND CAREER FAIR OPEN HOUSE: More than 2,000 Secondary V students will attend the 24th annual English Montreal School Board Career Fair on Wednesday, October 23 and Thursday, October 24 at St. Pius X Career Centre in Ahuntsic (9955 Papineau). Jack Dym of Pipe and Piling Supplies Ltd is the event’s title sponsor. From 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on October 23, the Education and Career Fair will be open to the community-at-large. Organizers note that this is a good opportunity for parents to attend with their children (Grades 9, 10 and 11) as they look towards post-secondary education options in a one-stop shopping experience.

CARE CONFERENCE: Under the leadership of the Quebec English School Boards Association, community stakeholders assembled to hold a conference called CARE (Community + Action + Resolve = Education) September 25 & 26 at the Holiday Inn near Old Montreal. Partners in planning this important conference were the Association of Directors General of English School Boards of Québec, Québec Provincial Association of Teachers, English Parents' Committee Association of Québec, Association of Administrators of English Schools of Québec, Québec Federation of Home and School Associations and the Quebec Community Groups Network. Organizers also worked very closely on this program with Lorraine O’Donnell representing Quebec English-Speaking Communities Research Network/Inter-Level Educational Table. The aim of the conference was to strengthen the vital link between the education community and the wider official language minority community and society it serves, share knowledge, and develop innovative ways to make the public English education system more effective. All sessions over the two-day conference were recorded and organizers and will be producing a complete report with recommendations to deposit with the Minister of Education. Organizers were able to provide this conference free of charge with special thanks to important funding from the Ministry of Education, the Secrétariat aux relations avec les Québécois d’expression anglaise, the Association of Directors General of English Schools of Quebec and the Department of Canadian Heritage.

BILL 40 CASE AND FUNDRAISER: The Quebec Court of Appeal will hear the case on Bill 40, the Quebec government legislation to abolish English school boards. The nine English boards already won the first round in the Quebec Superior Court, where the legislation was deemed unconstitutional. There will be a fundraising event on Thurs. Oct. 24 (5 pm to 7 pm) at Entrepots Dominion (3970 St. Ambroise) celebrating former Liberal MNA and cabinet minister Kathleen Weil and her husband, former Chambre de Commerce de Montréal President Mike Novak and featuring former Quebec Premier Jean Charest. ACCESSIBLE PLAYGROUND UNVEILED: On September 25, families, educators, therapists, and donors gathered at Mackay Centre and Philip E. Layton schools in NDG to celebrate the launch of a brand-new, fully accessible playground designed to welcome children of all abilities. Following years of extensive research, planning, and consultation, the eagerly awaited three- million-dollar playground project is now ready to welcome the children for whom it was built. School Principal Irini Margetis shares that the students and staff have been eagerly awaiting the completion of this project and that they “couldn’t be more thrilled. Every element of the design has been carefully considered and selected with input from members of CIUSSS West Central Montreal’s Rehabilitation and Multidisciplinary Services team who played a pivotal role in ensuring the playground’s accessibility. Special features include high colour contrast and varying textures to support children with visual impairments, a large communication board to facilitate communication by non-verbal children, a wheelchair-adapted merry-go-round and swing, and the use of materials specially vetted to ensure no interference with the cochlear implants worn by some of the students who are deaf or hard of hearing. Joe Ortona, Chair of the English Montreal School Board to which both schools belong, adds that the building and launch of this playground “is a significant milestone for the schools,” and that “the EMSB is deeply grateful to everyone involved.”

The undertaking was initiated by Habilitas Foundation, an organization dedicated to raising and dispersing funds for projects and programs in service of people of all ages living with physical disabilities and was championed enthusiastically by campaign co-Chairs Pierre and Catherine Boivin. Catherine herself a former MAB-Mackay student, shares that she and her father “are extremely grateful for the generous response of everyone who participated in making this vision a reality, and for the time and dedication that was invested by all parties. We look forward to seeing the playground filled with smiles every day and hope this adapted playground will inspire others to think about universal access to play for children everywhere in Montreal.”

MATHESON VISITS WESTMOUNT: Montreal Canadiens defenceman and assistant captain Michael Matheson visited Westmount High School on September 12 to engage with students on the topic of leadership. Mr. Matheson, an ambassador of the Champions for Life Foundation, is committed to inspiring youth to build the skills, confidence, and motivation to stay active throughout their lives. Born and raised in West Island Montreal, Mr. Matheson has become a key figure for the Canadiens, known for his leadership both on and off the ice. During his visit to Westmount High School, he spoke to students about leadership, shares his personal journey, and discussed how teamwork and perseverance play a role in his success as a professional athlete.

SCREENAGERS: On Thursday, October 10 (6 pm to 9 pm) Westmount High School is hosting a community viewing of Screenagers Next Chapter: Addressing Youth Mental Health in the Digital Age, a film that examines the science behind teen’s emotional challenges, the interplay of social media, and most importantly, what can be done in our schools and homes to help them build crucial skills to navigate stress, anxiety, and depression in our digital age. The one hour documentary will be followed by a 30-minute moderated Q&A panel with mental health-related professionals from Montreal. After the panel discussion, attendees are invited to visit kiosks of various organizations that support the well-being of our students and families within our community. THE BASU BROTHERS: Writers and brothers Arjun and Arpon Basu returned to their former elementary school, Edinburgh in Montreal West, to talk about their respective careers. Arpon is the editor in chief for The Athletic considered one of the best sports websites in the world. It is owned by the New York Times. He has covered the Montreal Canadiens since 2000 and not surprisingly responded to many hockey questions. Arjun is a seasoned author. His latest book, a piece of fiction called the Reeds, was released this month. It focuses on a dysfunctional family residing in the West End of Montreal. JAPANESE CONSULATE: EMSB Director General Nick Katalifos, Director Adult Education and Vocational Services Angela Spagnolo and Manager of Marketing and Communications Michael Cohen were invited to the Consul General of Japan’s residence in Westmount for a meeting with some members of the country’s business community here in Montreal. Consul General Akihiko Uchikawa and Vice-Consul Yo Ishikawa led the discussion. This was followed by a question and answer period. Most of the queries surrounded the Bill 96 language law and clarifications regarding eligibility rules for international students. Mr. Katalifos explained the process in detail and Ms. Spagnolo provided an overview of the many options available in the AEVS sector. Many of those around the table are sending their children to the EMSB, albeit for limited periods in order to comply with Bill 96. Representatives from the Quebec Association of Independent Schools (QAIS) were also present.

MURAL UNVEILED: When students returned to Michelangelo International Elementary School in Rivière des Prairies after their summer vacation, they were stunned to see the façade of their school had been transformed. Over the course of the summer, renowned local artist Whatisadam (Adam Vieira) painted a multi-part mural that encompasses one entire side of the building, highlighting the spirit and values which makes Michelangelo International Elementary School unique. He is also a graduate of Michelangelo and Vincent Massey Collegiate With Adam on hand, the mural was officially unveiled on Thursday. September 19. Joining him were students, who showcased the values and characteristics permanently portrayed on the side of their building.

REMEMBERING THE PAST: In recognition of Truth and Reconciliation, Personal Development and Community Involvement Animators Vince Lacroce, Mary Poullas, Veronica D'Agata, Ibrahim Abou Arab and Nesbitt Elementary School Arts Specialist Matthew Balanca-Rodrigues have created a beautiful initiative to honour the legacy of the children impacted by residential schools. The "Commemorating the Past" initiative has united 16 EMSB schools (Carlyle Elementary, Cedarcrest Elementary, Dalkeith Elementary, Dante Elementary, Gerald McShane Elementary, John Caboto Elementary, Honore Mercier Elementary, Leonardo da Vinci Academy, L.I.N.K.S High School, Marymount Academy, Nesbitt Elementary, Parkdale Elementary, Perspectives | High School, Pierre de Coubertin Elementary, Pierre de Coubertin B.A.S.E, and St. Laurent Adult Education Centre). They have created 6000 "Paper Links" in orange and white to acknowledge that residential schools are a part of our history, to recognize the experience of those who went to Indian residential schools, to honour them, and show a collective commitment to ensure that Every Child Matters. The "Paper Links" joined together form a powerful chain of hope and unity to serve as a visual reminder of the importance of healing, learning, and dreaming for a better future. HOLIDAY CARD CONTEST: Senator Tony Loffreda was at Sinclair Laird Elementary School in Park Extension on September 30 to launch a holiday greeting card contest, in conjunction with the EMSB. Working with their respective Arts teachers, students in grades four to six will be eligible to submit their design to appear on The Senator’s e-card. Some entries will also be used by e-cards for EMSB commissioners, staff and schools. It should be non-denominational and sent either by mail via the school or digitally by e-mail. The deadline to submit is Nov. 15 via tony.loffreda@sen.parl.gc.ca or by mail (no stamp required) to Senate of Canada, Ottawa, Ontario K1A OA4. Since this kickoff took place on Orange Shirt Day, Grade 5 students Maddison Muray and Soumaya Biland from teacher Melanie Reis Carreira’s class spoke about their experience at a Pow Wow. Art teacher Uwarna Markandu led a discussion on the topic. Senator Loffreda and EMSB Chair Joe Ortona spoke about the importance of commemorating National Truth and Reconciliation Day. POW WOW: Recently, students from LINKS and Perspectives I High School gathered at Concordia University’s Loyola Campus and participated in an immersive and educational POW WOW event, celebrating Indigenous culture, traditions, and community! The event was hosted by Concordia University, in collaboration with local Indigenous leaders and educators to provide students with a unique opportunity to witness the richness of Indigenous heritage. Thank you to all the staff members of both LINKS and Perspectives I High School along with Personal Development and Community Involvement Animator Lacroce for coordinating the outing.

TERRY FOX RUN: Most EMSB schools held their Terry Fox Runs in September. Terry Fox, a 22-year-old Canadian who lost his leg to osteosarcoma, made headlines in 1980 when he decided to run across Canada to raise both awareness and money for cancer research. Terry had planned to run across the country, but he had to stop sooner than hoped as the cancer had sadly spread to his lungs. During the Marathon of Hope, he averaged a marathon a day every day using a prosthetic leg. He died less than a year after beginning. He was 22 years old. Since his death, thousands of Terry Fox runs have been held each September across Canada and throughout the world. He has inspired generations of Canadians, but perhaps no one more so than Eddy Nolan.

At Westmount High School, Leadership guru Jeff Kosow hosted this inspiring video. Roslyn Elementary School in Westmount dedicated their run to the memory of Nolan, their former caretaker who was passionate in his support of the late Terry Fox. Tragically, Eddy got cancer himself and he passed away last spring. Bridget Butler, a graduate of Roslyn (2006) and Westmount High (2011), moved to London, England eight years ago to attend law school. She now works in the legal department for a publishing house. Her dad, Noel Butler, is a noted professional soccer analyst for TSN 690 Radio. On September 15 she took part in the Terry Fox Run at Battersea Park in London to raise money for the Institute of Cancer Research. She decided to run for Eddy Nolan and everyone else she’s known who have sadly passed away from cancer. “Eddy was my primary school's caretaker,” she remembers. “He was a keen runner and Terry Fox super fan, and it was him who organized and headed our school's Terry Fox Run in Montréal. I have such fond memories of these annual fundraisers and runs at Roslyn. Eddy was very unfortunately diagnosed with cancer himself several years ago, and died in April of this year.”

Veteran NHL defenceman Marco Scandella and Canadian Olympic wrestler Alex Moore participated in the annual Terry Fox Run at Royal Vale School on October 1. Scandella, who just announced his retirement after a 14 year career, was a student at Royal Vale High School. Moore attended nearby Willingdon Elementary School, as did Scandella. As a result, Willingdon students were also on on hand to meet these two heroes. The six-foot-three, 212 pound Scandella played for the Minnesota Wild, Buffalo Sabres, Montreal Canadiens and St. Louis Blues. In 784 games he scored 51 goals and tallied 119 assists for 170 points. Moore made his Olympic debut when he hits the mat in the men’s 86kg freestyle event at Paris 2024. He secured his spot after finishing in the top two at the Pan American Olympic Qualifier in March 2024. That was despite breaking his hand just seven weeks before the competition.

ST MONICA MUSIC : As part of Journées de la culture 2024, the popular Quebec group Alfa Rococo and the Montreal Symphony Orchestra recorded a beautiful song “Plus je sais, mieux je suis” Une Chanson à l'école. At St. Monica Elementary School in NDG, music students of Luana Crenguta Stan in Grades 1 to 6 practiced to same number and did so before the school’s Terry Fox Run on Sept. 27.

This means the workbooks and school supplies must be packaged and shipped to the students’ homes by mail. To accomplish this, QVA got an assist from the students and staff from John F. Kennedy High School of the Work Oriented Training Program. A big thanks to Anthony Tonin, Shanna Marcarelli and their students who packed up over 50 boxes!

WELCOME BACK AT LHA: There was the traditional Back to School celebration for students at LaurenHill Academy in St. Laurent on Sept. 20. Students took advantage of a beautiful day to take part in outdoor inflatable games, dancing to the tunes of deejay and lots of fun food in the back yard.

LIVE RECORDING IL TELE QUIZ ITALIANO: The final episode of the first season of ESATTO: Il Tele Quiz Italiano was recorded live, showcasing the exciting culmination of this engaging Italian game show which has already begun airing on ICI Television this fall! The EMSB’s integrated Italian PELO schools—East Hill, Dante, and Pierre de Coubertin—took part in the event at Lester B. Pearson High School in Montreal North. This marked the conclusion of a dynamic competition that recorded over 20 episodes last spring, featuring 15 teams of three (3) students from each of the three schools. In the finals, three teams competed for the championship, showcasing their knowledge of Italian culture, history, and geography. During this final recording, the top three teams—one from each school—were awarded for their outstanding performance in the game show. The results are under wraps for now—don’t miss the show to see which team comes out on top! Each school will also be featured in an episode where their school administrator and PELO teacher(s) were interviewed. They had the chance to discuss and promote their programs, highlighting the exceptional educational opportunities available in our east-end schools. This exciting collaboration between ICI Television and our Educational Services Department was made possible through the leadership of Anna Villalta, EMSB Assistant Director of Ed. Services, whose dedication helped bring this initiative to life. A heartfelt thank you to Italian PELO teachers— Carmela Bonifacio, Sonia Bertone, Antonella Andricciola and Hatem Makhlouf—whose patience and commitment helped prepare our students for the ESATTO tele quiz. Their support and commitment have been instrumental in our success, and we truly appreciate all their hard work! QUEL TALENT: Two EMSB students, Myla La Fratta (Lester B Pearson High School) and Kaylee Cardo (Laurier Macdonald High School) along with their team LIL AFRO KREW from L’Académie de Danse de Montréal, auditioned for the television show “Quel Talent” (Quebec’s Got Talent) on Noovo. They got the golden buzzer and won $3,000. They have moved directly to the semi-finals, which will begin airing on October 28. That will lead up to the live finale on November 11.

CHORALE NEWS: The EMSB Chorale started its season on September 7, so far welcoming 62 returning members and 30 new members. This year, the choir celebrates its 45th anniversary and looks forward to inviting alumni to sing in the spring concert on May 3. Other highlights of the year will be the annual Holiday Concert on December 7 at Christ Church Cathedral, premiering a newly commissioned work by Montreal composer Marie-Claire Saindon and several collaborative projects, including one with the Rosemount High School Music Department. For more information on the chorale, contact conductor Pat Abbott at pabbott@emsb.qc.ca or 514-483-7200 ext. 7234. This will be Pat’s 35th season at the helm of the chorale. Rounding out the music staff are Associate Conductor Marie-Eve Arseneau and pianist Anne-Marie Denoncourt.

GOOD LUCK ATHINA: Athina Galanogeorgos, Assistant Director of Educational Services, has announced her planned retirement. Her last day of work is Nov. 21. Athina’s journey began when she and her parents emigrated from Greece while she was still a toddler. She quickly adapted to her new environment, learning English by watching television and becoming the family's interpreter at a young age. Her parents instilled in her a strong work ethic and a love for learning and education. They frequently read with her and filled their home with books she still treasures to this day. She has fond memories of attending Barclay Elementary School, where she was inspired by caring teachers who nurtured her love for learning. She went on to graduate from Malcolm Campbell High School and pursued her passion for languages and cultures at Vanier College, becoming fluent in both Italian and German. Athina’s academic journey continued at McGill University, where she earned a Bachelor of Education in TESL and FSL. During her early teaching years, she also completed a Master of Education in Educational Administration at McGill, demonstrating her commitment to professional growth. Her teaching career took her to Wagar High School, Riverside Park Academy, and Royal Vale School, before she moved into administrative roles as Vice-Principal and then Principal at Rosemount High School. In 2006, Athina joined the Educational Services Department at the EMSB, overseeing numerous dossiers including the Arts, the Chorale, Physical Education, Social Sciences, CLCs, Library services, Career Development, and Inner-city schools. HAIRDRESSING EXCHANGE: An ocean could not keep two premiere hairdressing programs apart, as on Thursday, September 26, students and staff from the Lycée professionnel Pierre Masson program based in Nantes, France, visited Laurier Macdonald Vocational Training and Career Centre in St. Léonard to kick off an international collaboration. The alliance was the idea of Stéphane Scotto Di Cesare, renowned avant-garde editorial hairstylist, hair designer, educator, wigmaker and headpiece creator. “Our goal is to bring together 30 hairdressing students from France with 30 hairdressing students from Laurier Macdonald to work on combining their respective skills and competencies to create something incredibly unique,” said Anna-Maria Borsellino, Principal of Laurier Macdonald Vocational Training and Career Centre. “This is truly a first, not only for our program, but for adult education in Montreal.” In addition to the students collaborating on September 26, the team from Lycée professionnel Pierre Masson also accompanied the hairdressing and aesthetic students from Laurier Macdonald as they provided hairdressing and makeup services for the Montreal edition of Toronto Kids Fashion Week on September 28. “Collaboration and partnerships are essential in education,” said Antonella Anania,” coordinator of Laurier Macdonald Career Centre’s hairdressing program. “We’re excited to see this partnership flourish and we hope that this visit is the first of many to come.

GALILEO WELCOME BACK: This year’s welcome back event at Galileo Adult Centre was a resounding success, as the school greeted nearly 900 students returning for the 2024 academic year. The atmosphere was lively and upbeat, with music filling the air and smiles all around as students reconnected with their peers and teachers. One of the highlights of the event was a sweet treat for everyone to enjoy: freshly made churros. The churros added a festive, delicious touch, helping to create the warm and welcoming learning environment Galileo Adult Centre is known for. With a new academic year ahead, Galileo Adult Centre continues to foster a positive and inclusive community, offering a warm and memorable start to students’ educational journeys. Meanwhile, on September 23 and 24, students and staff from the Galileo Adult Centre embarked on a delightful field trip to Verger Magie de la Pomme, in St. Eustache. Over 300 participants took part in the annual apple-picking adventure. Students and staff were greeted with warm hospitality and had the opportunity to explore the picturesque orchard, with its fresh apples, photo booth and wagon rides. In addition to the apple picking, the students were treated to a tasting of the orchard's famous apple cake, baked on-site, and freshly squeezed apple juice. The delicious treats were a highlight for many, showcasing the orchard's dedication to quality and the diverse ways to enjoy their apple harvest. The event was a wonderful opportunity for students and staff to bond outside the classroom and enjoy a hands-on experience in nature. Everyone left with bags full of apples and memories of a sweet day spent among friends and fresh fruit.

REMARKABLE BIKE RACK: The team at Galileo wishes to extend its heartfelt gratitude to the skilled students of the Laurier Macdonald Career Centre (LMAC) welding program for their outstanding craftsmanship in creating a remarkable bike rack. Their dedication and creativity has not only provided the Galileo students with a secure spot to lock up their bicycles, but have also significantly enhanced the Centre's environment.

A WALK TO REMEMBER: On September 30, students and staff at Galileo Adult Centre came together to honor the memory of Indigenous children and hope for healing. They embarked on a neighborhood walk as a way to remember Indigenous children who were taken from their families during this painful time in Canadian history. The walk helped everyone reflect and learn more about the past. It was a time for the community to show support and to think about how we can work towards healing. During the walk, students shared stories and discussed the importance of understanding Canada's history. This walk wasn’t just a way to remember, it was a step toward reconciliation, showing that Galileo Adult Centre is committed to learning, healing, and helping to build a better future for Indigenous communities. Donations were also collected for the Montreal Indigenous Community Network. This act of giving demonstrated the school’s dedication to reconciliation not only through reflection but also through meaningful action. Our staff members’ and students’ generous donations totaled close to $300.

MENTAL HEALTH: James Lyng Adult Education Centre in St. Henri held a Mental Health Awareness Day on October 8. Participating organizations and stations included: RECLAIM Literacy; Sandra's Shaitsu Massage; Holly’s Class (Social Media); Y-Minds (Group anxiety, coping mechanism); Chelsea's Yoga; La Maison Jean Lapointe (Alcohol, gambling, cyber bullying); CHABAD (addiction, mental health counselling); SPCM (Suicide prevention); Caring Paws (Dog Therapy); PIVOT; KAHOOT; and Passpor. Students who participated in all 12 stations were entered into a draw for fantastic prizes.

ÉLECTIONS SCOLAIRES : La période de mise en candidature a pris fin pour les élections scolaires qui se tiendront le dimanche 3 novembre (vote par anticipation le 27 octobre). Les électrices et les électeurs se verront remettre deux bulletins de vote : un pour élire le président ou la présidente de leur commission scolaire locale et un autre pour élire le ou la commissaire qui représentera leur circonscription. Seules les personnes inscrites sur la liste électorale d'une commission scolaire anglophone peuvent voter. Pour vérifier si vous êtes sur la liste, vous devez communiquer avec Élections Québec au 1 888 353-2846. Il n'est pas nécessaire d'être parent ou d'avoir des enfants dans le réseau scolaire pour voter. Un parent dont l'enfant est ou a été admis dans une commission scolaire anglophone devrait déjà être inscrit sur la liste électorale de la commission scolaire, mais devrait tout de même confirmer son statut. Les parents dont l'enfant est actuellement admis dans une école d'un centre de services scolaire francophone ne peuvent pas voter dans le cadre des élections scolaires des commissions scolaire anglophones. Cependant, les anglophones et les francophones dont les enfants fréquentaient auparavant une école française, mais qui désirent désormais voter aux élections scolaires anglophones, peuvent choisir de s'inscrire sur la liste électorale de la commission scolaire anglophone de leur localité. Les personnes sans enfant ont également la possibilité de voter à l’élection de la commission scolaire anglophone de leur localité. La dernière journée pour la mise à jour des listes est le 15 octobre. FOIRE DE L'ÉDUCATION ET DES CARRIÈRES: Plus de 2 000 élèves de 5e secondaire prendront part à la 24e édition annuelle de la Foire de l’éducation et des carrières de la Commission scolaire English-Montréal les mercredi 23 et jeudi 24 octobre, au Centre de carrières St. Pius X à Ahuntsic (9955, avenue Papineau). Jack Dym de Pipe and Piling Supplies Ltd est le commanditaire en titre de l’événement. Le 23 octobre, de 18 h à 20 h 30, la Foire de l’éducation et des carrières ouvrira ses portes au grand public. Les organisateurs soulignent que c’est l’occasion par excellence pour parents et élèves (3e, 4e et 5e secondaire) de se renseigner sous un même toit sur les diverses options postsecondaires qui s’offrent à eux. L’admission et le stationnement sont gratuits. CONFÉRENCE CARE: Sous la direction de l'Association des commissions scolaires anglophones du Québec, les acteurs de la communauté se sont réunis pour tenir une conférence intitulée CARE (Community + Action + Resolve = Education) les 25 et 26 septembre à l’hôtel Holiday Inn près du Vieux-Montréal. Cette importante conférence est le fruit d’un partenariat entre l’Association des directeurs généraux des commissions scolaires anglophones du Québec, l'Association provinciale des enseignantes et des enseignants du Québec, l'Association des comités de parents anglophones du Québec, l'Association des administrateurs des écoles anglaises du Québec, la Fédération québécoise des associations foyers-écoles du Québec et le Quebec Community Groups Network. Les organisateurs ont également collaboré étroitement avec Lorraine O'Donnell, qui représente le Réseau de recherche sur les communautés québécoises d’expression anglaises/la Table d’éducation interordres. La conférence avait pour but de consolider le lien vital entre la communauté éducative de même que la communauté minoritaire de langue officielle et la société qu'elle dessert, de partager les connaissances et de développer des moyens innovants d’accroître l’efficacité du système éducatif public anglophone. Toutes les séances présentées durant ces deux jours ont été enregistrées et les organisateurs produiront un rapport complet accompagné de recommandations qu’ils soumettront au ministre de l’Éducation. Cette conférence a pu être organisée gratuitement grâce au financement du ministère de l'Éducation, du Secrétariat aux relations avec les Québécois d'expression anglaise, de l'Association des directeurs généraux des commissions scolaires anglophones du Québec et du ministère du Patrimoine canadien.
INAUGURATION D'UNE AIRE DE JEUX ACCESSIBLE: Le 25 septembre, des familles, des éducateurs, des thérapeutes et âmes charitables ont afflué vers les écoles Centre Mackay et Philip E. Layton de Notre-Dame-de-Grâce pour célébrer l'inauguration d'un nouveau terrain de jeu entièrement accessible, conçu pour accueillir les enfants, peu importe leur capacité. Le terrain de jeu tant attendu de trois millions de dollars, qui est le fruit de plusieurs années de recherche, de planification et de consultation, est maintenant prêt à accueillir les élèves de ces écoles spécialisées. « Les élèves et le personnel attendent avec impatience la réalisation de ce projet, et ils sont on ne peut plus emballés », a affirmé la directrice d’école, Irini Margetis. Chaque élément du terrain de jeu a été pensé avec soin en concertation avec les membres de l’équipe de la Réadaptation et des Services multidisciplinaires du CIUSS du Centre-Ouest-de-l’Île-de-Montréal, qui ont joué un rôle clé pour garantir un environnement accessible. Reconnaissable à ses couleurs contrastantes et à ses surfaces texturées qui répondent aux besoins des élèves ayant une déficience visuelle, le terrain de jeu comprend un tableau de communication destiné aux enfants qui ne parlent pas ainsi qu’un manège et des balançoires adaptés aux fauteuils roulants. Le tout est fabriqué à partir de matériaux approuvés pour leur non-interférence avec les implants cochléaires que portent les élèves vivant avec la surdité ou une déficience auditive. Joe Ortona, président de la Commission scolaire English-Montréal, rajoute que la construction et l’inauguration du terrain de jeu « marquent une étape importante pour les écoles » qui en font partie et que « la CSEM est très reconnaissante envers toutes les personnes impliquées ». Le projet a été lancé par la Fondation Habilitas, un organisme voué à recueillir des fonds pour soutenir des projets et programmes bénéficiant aux personnes de tous âges qui vivent avec des déficiences physiques. Il a pris forme grâce au soutien enthousiaste de Pierre et de Catherine Boivin, qui ont coprésidé la campagne de financement. Étant elle-même une ancienne élève de l’école du Centre MAB-Mackay, Catherine confie qu’elle et son père sont « extrêmement reconnaissants de l’appui généreux de ceux et celles qui ont permis de concrétiser cette vision et du temps investi par les personnes impliquées ». Elle rajoute : « Nous avons bien hâte de voir ce terrain de jeu inspirer des sourires au quotidien et espérons qu’il suscitera la réflexion sur l’accès universel des aires de jeu pour les enfants partout à Montréal. »
MATHESON DE PASSAGE À L'ÉCOLE WESTMOUNT: Le défenseur et adjoint au capitaine des Canadiens de Montréal, Mike Matheson, s’est rendu à l'école secondaire Westmount le 12 septembre dernier pour s’entretenir de leadership avec les élèves. Ambassadeur de la Fondation Champions pour la vie, Mike s'efforce d’inspirer les jeunes à acquérir les aptitudes, la confiance et la motivation nécessaires pour rester actifs tout au long de leur vie. Natif de l'ouest de l'île de Montréal où il a grandi, Mike est devenu une figure emblématique dans l’organisation des Canadiens, reconnu pour son leadership tant sur la glace que dans la vie de tous les jours. Lors de son passage à l'école secondaire Westmount, il a abordé le thème du leadership, partagé son parcours personnel et expliqué l’incidence du travail d'équipe et de la persévérance dans sa carrière d'athlète professionnel accompli. Le directeur Luigi Santamaria, le directeur adjoint Matthew Shapiro ainsi que l'enseignant d'éducation physique et à la santé Jeff Kosow ont coordonné la visite avec David Arsenault et Joanne Lawson de la Fondation Champions pour la vie.
CONSULAT DU JAPON : Nick Katalifos, directeur général de la CSEM, Angela Spagnolo, directrice du Service de l'éducation des adultes et de la formation professionnelle, ainsi que Michael Cohen, gestionnaire du Service du marketing et des communications, ont été conviés à la résidence du consul général du Japon à Westmount pour une rencontre avec des membres de la communauté d'affaires ici à Montréal. Le consul général Akihiko Uchikawa et le vice-consul Yo Ishikawa ont mené la discussion, suivie d'une période de questions. Les enjeux linguistiques et la loi 96 ont été au cœur des échanges, et des précisions ont été demandées concernant les conditions d'admissibilité des élèves internationaux. M. Katalifos a expliqué le processus en détail et Mme Spagnolo a donné un aperçu de la panoplie d’options offertes dans le secteur de l'EAFP. Nombre de personnes présentes autour de la table envoient leurs enfants à la CSEM, ne serait-ce que pour une certaine période afin de se conformer à la loi 96. Des représentants de l'Association des écoles privées du Québec (AEPQ) ont également participé à cette rencontre.
DÉVOILEMENT D’UNE MURALE: Au retour des vacances estivales, les élèves de l'école primaire internationale Michelangelo, à Rivière-des-Prairies, ont constaté à leur grand étonnement que la façade de leur école avait été transformée. Au cours de l'été, Whatisadam (Adam Vieira), artiste local bien connu, a peint une murale à multiples facettes recouvrant un côté tout entier du bâtiment et illustrant l'esprit et les valeurs qui confèrent à l'école primaire internationale Michelangelo son caractère unique. Dans son jeune âge, Adam Vieira a fréquenté l'école Michelangelo. En présence d'Adam, la murale a été officiellement dévoilée le jeudi 19 septembre. Il était entouré d’élèves qui incarnent les valeurs et les qualités véhiculées en permanence sur cette murale.

SE SOUVENIR DU PASSÉ : En reconnaissance de la vérité et de la réconciliation, les animateurs du développement personnel et de l'engagement communautaire Vince Lacroce, Mary Poullas, Veronica D'Agata, Ibrahim Abou Arab et le spécialiste des arts à l'école primaire Nesbitt, Matthew Balanca-Rodrigues, ont créé une belle initiative afin d’honorer l'héritage des enfants touchés par les pensionnats autochtones. L'initiative Commemorating the Past a réuni 16 écoles primaires de la Commission scolaire English-Montréal (les écoles primaires Carlyle, Cedarcrest, Dalkeith, Dante, Gerald McShane, John Caboto, Honore Mercier, l’Académie Leonardo da Vinci, l’école secondaire L. I.N.K.S, l'Académie Marymount, l'école primaire Nesbitt, l'école primaire Parkdale, l'école secondaire Perspectives, l'école primaire Pierre de Coubertin, le service de garde B.A.S.E. à Pierre de Coubertin et le Centre d'éducation des adultes Saint-Laurent). Ensemble, ils ont réalisé 6 000 « maillons en papier » de couleur orange et blanc pour souligner que les pensionnats font partie de notre histoire, pour reconnaître l'expérience de ceux et celles qui ont fréquenté les pensionnats autochtones, leur rendre hommage et témoigner d'un engagement collectif visant à rappeler que chaque enfant compte. Les maillons en papier réunis forment une chaîne d'espoir et d'unité qui illustre visuellement la nécessité de guérir, d'apprendre et de rêver à un avenir meilleur. Les organisateurs souhaitent remercier Wanda Mullins, concierge au centre administratif, pour son aide.
CONCOURS DE CARTES DE VŒUX: Le 30 septembre, le sénateur Tony Loffreda s'est rendu à l'école primaire Sinclair Laird de Parc-Extension en vue de lancer un concours de cartes de vœux pour le temps des fêtes, de concert avec la CSEM. En collaboration avec leurs enseignants d'arts plastiques respectifs, les élèves de la 4e à la 6e année pourront soumettre leur dessin destiné à enjoliver la carte électronique du sénateur. Certains dessins seront également utilisés sur les cartes électroniques des commissaires, du personnel et des écoles de la CSEM. Le thème choisi se doit d’être non confessionnel, et les dessins devront être acheminés par courrier par l’entremise de l'école ou électroniquement par courriel. La date limite pour l’envoi des dessins est fixée au 15 novembre, à tony.loffreda@sen.parl.gc.ca ou par la poste (aucun affranchissement requis) à l'adresse suivante : Sénat du Canada, Ottawa, Ontario K1A OA4. Comme le coup d'envoi de cette initiative a eu lieu parallèlement à la Journée du chandail orange, les élèves de 5e année Maddison Muray et Soumaya Biland de la classe de l'enseignante Melanie Reis Carreira ont partagé leur expérience lors d'un pow-wow. L’enseignante d'arts plastiques Uwarna Markandu a animé une discussion sur le sujet. Le sénateur Loffreda et le président de la CSEM, Joe Ortona, ont souligné l'importance de commémorer la Journée nationale de la vérité et de la réconciliation. LUTTE CONTRE L'INTIMIDATION: Des élèves de la 1re à la 6e année de l'école primaire Our Lady of Pompei, à Ahuntsic, se sont joints à Amen Iseghohi pour une présentation inspirante sur la confiance en soi, l'autodiscipline et la lutte contre l'intimidation. Ensemble, ils établissent les bases de la résilience, du respect et de la responsabilisation face à l’avenir.
NOUVELLES DE LA CHORALE DE LA CSEM– SEPTEMBRE 2024: La Chorale de la CSEM a débuté sa saison le 7 septembre dernier avec 62 membres qui étaient de retour et 30 nouveaux membres. Cette année, la chorale fête son 45e anniversaire et invitera des anciens membres à se joindre aux membres actuels pour le concert du printemps le 3 mai prochain. À venir cette saison : le concert annuel des Fêtes le 7 décembre à la cathédrale Christ Church, la création d’une œuvre par la compositrice montréalaise Marie-Claire Saindon et quelques projets collaboratifs, dont un avec le départment de musique de Rosemount High School. ENREGISTREMENT EN DIRECT IL TELE QUIZ ITALIANO : Le dernier épisode de la première saison d'ESATTO: Il Tele Quiz Italiano a été enregistré en direct, point culminant de ce jeu télévisé italien des plus captivants diffusé cet automne sur ICI Télévision! Les écoles italiennes intégrées PELO de la CSEM – EastHill, Dante et Pierre de Coubertin – ont pris part à cet événement à l'école secondaire Lester B. Pearson de Montréal-Nord. Ceci marque la fin d'un concours enlevant échelonné sur plus de 20 épisodes enregistrés au printemps dernier et réunissant 15 équipes composées de trois (3) élèves provenant de chacune des trois écoles. Lors de la finale, trois équipes se sont disputé les grands honneurs en mettant à profit leurs connaissances en matière de culture, d'histoire et de géographie italiennes. Au cours de cet enregistrement final, les trois meilleures équipes, soit une pour chacune des écoles, ont été récompensées pour leur performance exceptionnelle tout au long de ce jeu télévisé. Les résultats sont pour l'instant confidentiels; ne ratez pas la grande finale pour connaître l’équipe qui remportera la première place! Chaque école fera également l’objet d’un segment mettant en vedette une entrevue réalisée avec la direction d'école ainsi que les enseignants du programme PELO. Ils ont eu l'occasion de présenter et de promouvoir leurs programmes et de souligner les possibilités éducatives exceptionnelles offertes dans nos écoles de l'est de Montréal. Cette collaboration captivante entre ICI Télévision et l’équipe des Services éducatifs a été rendue possible grâce au leadership d'Anna Villalta, directrice adjointe des Services éducatifs à la CSEM, dont le dévouement a contribué à la réalisation de ce projet. Un grand merci à nos merveilleux enseignants d'italien du programme PELO, soit Mme Carmela Bonifacio, Mme Sonia Bertone, Mme Antonella Andricciola et M. Hatem Makhlouf, dont la patience et l'engagement ont permis de préparer nos élèves au jeu télévisé ESATTO. Leur soutien et leur dévouement ont largement contribué à notre succès, et nous tenons à leur témoigner notre reconnaissance pour leur travail acharné! L'enregistrement en direct s’est déroulé au cours d’une soirée excitante en présences des hôtes Nick DeVincenzo et Silvana DiFlavio d'Appuntamento con Nick e Silvana. SEMAINE ÉDUCATION MÉDIAS : La Semaine éducation médias est un événement national annuel organisé par HabiloMedia pour faire la promotion de l'éducation aux médias numériques. QUEL TALENT : Deux élèves de la CSEM, Myla La Fratta (école secondaire Lester B. Pearson) et Kaylee Cardo (école secondaire Laurier Macdonald), ainsi que leur équipe LIL AFRO KREW de l'Académie de danse de Montréal, ont auditionné pour l'émission de télévision « Quel talent » sur Noovo (www.noova.ca). Elles ont obtenu le bouton doré et remporté 3 000 $. Elles passent ainsi directement aux demi-finales, qui seront diffusées le 28 octobre. La finale en direct sera présenté le 11 novembre. NOUVELLES DE LA CHORALE : La chorale de la CSEM a débuté sa saison le 7 septembre dernier avec 62 membres qui étaient de retour et 30 nouveaux venus. Cette année, la chorale célèbre son 45e anniversaire et invitera des anciens à se joindre aux membres actuels lors du concert du printemps le 3 mai prochain. À venir cette saison : le concert annuel des Fêtes le 7 décembre à la Cathédrale Christ Church, la création d'une œuvre par la compositrice montréalaise Marie-Claire Saindon et quelques projets collaboratifs, dont un avec le Département de musique de l'école secondaire Rosemont. NOUVEAU SITE WEB : L'équipe des sites Web de la CSEM, qui fait partie du Service du marketing et des communications, est heureuse d'annoncer le lancement du tout nouveau site Web de l'Académie internationale Marymount. Conçu pour améliorer l’expérience des visiteurs et faciliter l’accès aux contenus importants, notre site Web dispose d'une interface conviviale et renferme une panoplie de ressources. L’équipe des sites Web dirigée par Nur Erdem s’affaire présentement à la migration de tous les sites vers une nouvelle plateforme.
BONNE CHANCE ATHINA: Athina Galanogeorgos, directrice adjointe des Services éducatifs, a annoncé son intention de prendre sa retraite. Le 21 novembre sera sa dernière journée de travail. Le parcours d'Athina a commencé lorsqu’elle et ses parents ont immigré de la Grèce alors qu'elle était encore toute petite. Elle s'est rapidement adaptée à son nouvel environnement, apprenant l'anglais en regardant la télévision et devenant l'interprète de la famille dès son plus jeune âge. Ses parents lui ont inculqué une solide éthique de travail ainsi qu’une passion pour l'apprentissage et l'éducation. Ils lisaient souvent avec elle et la maison débordait de bouquins qu'elle chérit encore aujourd'hui. Elle garde un bon souvenir de son passage à l'école primaire Barclay, inspirée par des enseignants bienveillants qui ont su nourrir son désir d’apprendre. Au terme de ses études secondaires à l’école Malcolm Campbell, elle a poursuivi sa passion pour les langues et les cultures au Collège Vanier, apprenant l'italien et l'allemand. Elle a par la suite obtenu un baccalauréat en éducation en TESL (enseignement de l’anglais langue seconde) et FLS (français langue seconde) de l'Université McGill. Au cours de ses premières années d'enseignement, elle a également obtenu une maîtrise en éducation, concentration en administration scolaire à McGill, témoignant de son engagement envers le perfectionnement professionnel. Elle a enseigné à l'école secondaire Wagar, à l'académie Riverside Park et à l'école Royal Vale, avant d’occuper des fonctions administratives à titre de directrice adjointe puis de directrice à l'école secondaire Rosemont. En 2006, Athina a joint les rangs des Services éducatifs de la CSEM, où elle a piloté de nombreux dossiers, notamment les arts, la chorale, l'éducation physique, l’univers social, les CSC, les services de bibliothèque, le développement de carrières et les écoles en milieu défavorisé. Elle a également joué un rôle clé dans l'organisation des journées pédagogiques à l'échelle de la commission scolaire.
SERVICES DE L’ÉDUCATION DES ADULTES ET DE LA FORMATION PROFESSIONNELLE
ÉCHANGE DE SAVOIR FAIRE : Malgré l’océan qui les sépare, des élèves et des membres du personnel du Lycée professionnel Pierre Masson de Nantes, en France, ont rendu visite, le 26 septembre, à leurs pairs du Centre de formation professionnelle et de carrières Laurier Macdonald de Saint-Léonard, pour donner le coup d'envoi d'une collaboration internationale mettant en lumière deux programmes exceptionnels en coiffure. Cette initiative a vu le jour grâce à Stéphane Scotto Di Cesare, coiffeur-styliste, créateur, formateur et perruquier avant-gardiste de renom. « Notre objectif visait à réunir 30 élèves en coiffure en provenance de France et 30 élèves en coiffure de Laurier Macdonald dans l’espoir de conjuguer leurs compétences professionnelles respectives et ainsi donner lieu à une expérience tout à fait unique », s’est exclamée Anna Maria Borsellino, directrice du Centre de formation professionnelle et de carrières Laurier Macdonald. « Il s’agit d’une première, non seulement pour notre programme, mais aussi pour le milieu de l'éducation des adultes à Montréal. » Outre la collaboration entre les élèves le 26 septembre, la délégation du Lycée professionnel Pierre Masson a accompagné l’équipe en coiffure et en esthétique de Laurier Macdonald pour assurer les services de coiffure et de maquillage dans le cadre de l'édition montréalaise de la Semaine de la mode pour les enfants de Toronto, le 28 septembre. « La collaboration et les partenariats s’avèrent essentiels en éducation », de dire Antonella Anania, coordonnatrice du programme de coiffure du Centre de carrières Laurier Macdonald. « Nous nous réjouissons de voir s’épanouir ce partenariat et nous espérons vivement que cette visite sera la première de nombreuses autres à venir. »
LA RENTRÉE À GALILEO : La rentrée scolaire au Centre d’éducation des adultes Galileo a connu un succès retentissant cette année, l'école accueillant près de 900 élèves pour l'année scolaire 2024. L'atmosphère était animée et enjouée, sourires et musique étaient au rendez-vous alors que les élèves étaient heureux de retrouver leurs pairs et leurs enseignants. L'un des moments marquants de la rentrée fut sans contredit une friandise que tout le monde a pu déguster : des churros fraîchement préparés. Les churros ont ajouté une petite touche festive et délectable à la rentrée, contribuant à créer l'environnement d'apprentissage chaleureux et accueillant qui caractérise le Centre d’éducation des adultes Galileo. À l'aube d'une nouvelle année scolaire, Galileo continue de favoriser un environnement positif et inclusif pour assurer aux élèves un parcours éducatif des plus chaleureux et mémorables.
CUEILLETTE DE POMMES AU VERGER MAGIE DE LA POMME: Les 23 et 24 septembre, les élèves et le personnel du Centre d’éducation des adultes Galileo ont effectué une sortie au verger La Magie de la Pomme, à Saint-Eustache. Plus de 300 participants ont pris part à cette activité annuelle de cueillette de pommes. Les élèves et le personnel ont été accueillis chaleureusement et ont eu l'occasion d'explorer le verger pittoresque, avec ses pommes fraîches, sa cabine photo et ses promenades en charrette. En plus de la cueillette des pommes, les élèves ont eu droit à une dégustation du célèbre gâteau aux pommes du verger, cuit sur place, et du jus de pomme fraîchement pressé. Les délicieuses dégustations se sont avérées un moment fort pour beaucoup d'entre eux, mettant en lumière l'engagement du verger envers la qualité et illustrant les multiples façons de profiter de sa récolte de pommes. Cette sortie fut une excellente occasion pour les élèves et le personnel de nouer des liens en dehors de la salle de classe et de vivre une expérience sur le terrain en plein nature. Tout le monde est reparti avec des sacs remplis de pommes et des souvenirs d'une douce journée passée entre amis et entourée de fruits frais.
