FIVE BOARDS/SERVICE CENTRES UNITE: The  three school service centers on the Island of Montreal (SSC) — the Centre de services scolaire de Montréal, the Centre de services scolaire Marguerite-Bourgeoys, and the Centre de services scolaire de la Pointe-de-l’Île — along with the two school boards (SB) — the English Montreal School Board and the Lester B. Pearson School Board — held a joint press conference on August 22 to provide an update on the upcoming school year as they actively prepare to welcome students. They emphasized that all teams are working tirelessly as part of this annual operation. For several months, the administrations and staff of Montreal's school service centers and school boards have been meticulously planning and organizing the start of the school year. All teams are implementing the necessary actions to ensure that students have a good start to the school year. Planning for the start of the school year requires complex coordination, including the recruitment and assignment of staff, management of student registrations, class composition, organization of school transportation, building improvements, and the adaptation of educational services to meet the specific needs of students. Every aspect of the school year is handled with care to ensure that students, teachers, professional staff, and support staff have the appropriate resources from day one.

RWA FOUNDATION: The Royal West Academy Foundation, which depends entirely on the generosity of the school community to raise funds for projects benefiting the students and staff directly, continues to do excellent work. Last year the school unveiled a brand-new auditorium (Performing Arts Centre), a project that had been in the making for over a decade and for which the Foundation has been intimately involved in, resulting in close to $420,000 raised towards this endeavor.  They also raised funds for the redesign of their first Active Learning Classroom in the context of the Active Learning Classroom Campaign. Room 301 Math and Science was recently refitted with new furniture to accommodate different learning styles and teaching settings. The Active Learning Classroom Campaign is a multi-year project. Several classrooms will be selected to undergo a transformation each year. All children who attend Royal West Academy, including our children, will have the opportunity to benefit from the modernization of classrooms over the time they attend RWA. “Our objective is to raise funds for as many classrooms at the school that are needed,” said Foundation member Judith Obadia. STUDENT OF THE MONTH:   The EMSB’s Student of the Month for September is Kayla Fusco. While Kayla just began her first year at Lester B. Pearson High School, she is being recognized for her dedication to her fellow students while she attended Gerald McShane Elementary School.  While at Gerald McShane, Kayla was a dedicated volunteer for the school's breakfast program and knew exactly what was needed to make sure that the daily program ran smoothly. As a breakfast monitor, she was always a team-player, made sure that breakfast bins were delivered to each classroom, picked up by the end of the day and prepared for the next day.

Kayla and her parents are recognized at the Council meeting.

Last year, in recognition of her efforts, the Breakfast Club of Canada named Kayla as one of Canada's "Breakfast Champions," which celebrated the outstanding work of volunteers and school teams who devote their time and energy to ensure children get a healthy start to their day. Congratulations Kayla! We hope your commitment to the community continues to grow as you begin high school.

CULTURE  AND CITIZENSHIP IN QUEBEC: The Ministère de l’Éducation is launching the Culture and Citizenship in Quebec (CCQ) program of study, which was introduced by some schools on an optional basis during the 2023-2024 academic year and will be mandatory in all schools for 2024-2025 school year. Learning about culture and citizenship in Quebec, students will   evaluate sources, information and arguments, to identify the characteristics of culture and society in Quebec today, and to observe the related social relations. Subjects such as culture and dialogue will first be addressed in elementary school. Studies will then continue at the secondary level where ethics, citizenship and sociology will be addressed.  The objective of the CCQ program is not to provide specific answers to complex ethical questions, but rather to lead students to develop their critical thinking skills and ability to engage freely in empathetic dialogue. The program prioritizes an appreciation of democratic principles, a secular state governed by the rule of law, and the values of equality and respect for the dignity of human beings as provided for in the Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms. At the end of their schooling, students will have a meaningful repertoire of knowledge on personal development, interpersonal relationships as well as on all the dimensions of culture and society in Québec. Therefore, each child will have developed skills vital to their informed participation in exercising citizenship in Québec. The program will also lead students to aim for recognition of oneself and of others as well as for the common good.   Anne-Marie De Silva is the EMSB consultant for this course.

TERRY FOX RUNS: Every year, organizers of Terry Fox runs say they continue to be blown away by the generosity of schools across Canada.  Every school that signs up receives a complementary Terry Fox Toolkit of promotional materials, a customized online fundraising page and access to a wide array of online resources. Here is a letter we received with information for schools interested in participating.

SPCA PROGRAMMING: The Montreal SPCA has developed a Humane Education program and have been visiting elementary school classrooms since the spring!  Erin Martellani, Campaign Manager for Humane Education and Animal Advocacy, has the honour of giving these first presentations. Her experience so far visiting students from kindergarten to Grade 3 has been incredibly uplifting. Children are naturally interested and curious about animals, and the kiddos she visited were no exception. They were excited to learn about the fascinating differences and similarities between humans and animals and were bursting to share their own experiences with the class. They were able to intuitively empathize with how the animals whose stories they heard must have felt in different situations and were eager to learn how to interpret a dog’s body language. These important skills will help them know how to approach a dog safely and when to respect their need for space, a crucial step in bite prevention. “All in all, I can’t decide whether the most rewarding part of these presentations so far has been the many impromptu hugs I get, how engaged and receptive the students are throughout my visits or just knowing that the future might be a little brighter thanks to these inspiring kids,” she said. To learn more about the presentations they offer and to request a visit, have your child’s teacher or principal check out their website and contact them at education@spca.com. The EMSB Chorale.

THE CHORALE:  In November 2022, the EMSB Chorale sang for a video on Westmount Park School with Les Rugissants (professional chamber choir) and the Cobalt string quartet for an episode in their ARCHES series featuring music and architecturally interesting buildings in Montreal. The English version has been released on YouTube and here is the link.  Reminiscent of a student’s journey arriving at the end of her studies at Westmount Park School, this  building is in a style referring to the British Mock Tudor and Late Gothic revival movements, with its stone and brick materials, an imposing architectural style inspired by castles, fortresses, and churches. This time, Les Rugissants share the stage with the EMSB Youth  Chorale and the Cobalt Quartet, performing an excerpt from Giovanni Battista Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater.

GEMSTAR: The GemStar Circle of Excellence Scholarship and Mentorship Program, offered by the Playmas Montreal Cultural Association now enters its third year,  running from October 2024 to April 2025, with a Graduation Ceremony in June. At that time   successful participants will be awarded a $1,500 scholarship for their CEGEP studies. The GemStar Circle of Excellence is designed to recognize and nurture high-performing Black students entering Grade 11 who have demonstrated academic excellence and have maintained an average of at least 80 percent. Each selected student will be paired with a mentor, a professional from the community, to provide guidance and motivation throughout the school year. The deadline for applications is September 19, 2024, as the program will commence on October 4. Applications are available via high school guidance counsellors. Info:  playmasmontreal@gmail.com.

MIKE SHAW IN MEMORIAM: The EMSB mourns the passing of  former Spiritual Community Animator Father Mike Shaw.  Beloved priest, brother, friend, confessor, spiritual director, pastoral animator, and teacher, he passed away this past summer . Born in Alresford, Hampshire, England, he moved to Montreal and found community and inspiration at St. John Brebeuf Church, and after much soul searching, went to Boston to join the seminary in 1971. He was ordained to the Roman Catholic priesthood in 1975. While still a deacon, he  joined St. Thomas a Becket Church in Pierrefonds, a placement that would change his life. It was there that Fr. Mike met his lifelong friend Margaret Million, and so came to live at 252 Biscaye, where he would remain until Margaret's death in 2019, always a beloved member of a loyal West Island Christian community.

Fr. Mike Shaw

Fr. Mike lived his vocation in every moment: ministering to the unhoused, the sick, the lonely, the dying. Everywhere he went he learned the names and life stories of strangers, seeing the beauty and intrinsic value in everyone he met. Appropriately, his priestly ministry never let him stay in one place. After decades as a spiritual animator travelling to schools throughout Montreal for the EMSB and doing replacement ministry in churches all over the island, at the age of 76 Mike finally settled down as pastor of St. Edward the Confessor Mission in Pointe Claire, where he worked with his congregation to bring new life to the parish. As a priest, he was well known for making everyone feel welcome and loved by God, part of the church and the Body of Christ.   As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be sent to one of Fr. Mike's favorite charities, Operation Smile  or the Salvation Army, or a charity of your choice.

ANIMATORS TITLES CHANGE:  Student Services Department staff who previously were known as Spiritual Community Animators are now Personal Development and Community Involvement Service Animators.

POWER UP: During the month of September, Personal Development and Community Animator Vince Lacroce worked on a team-building welcoming workshop for students at L.I.N.K.S High School called "Power Up!" This fun-filled educational workshop was packed with games and exercises enabling students to gain a deeper understanding of teamwork, empathy, resilience, and improved communication skills. Participants engaged in various group challenges, collaborative games, all designed to strengthen their sense of belonging and community. Teachers and staff also took part, promoting an inclusive environment where everyone works together to achieve shared goals. "Our Team Building Day was an opportunity for students to step out of their comfort zones, work together, and form lasting connections,” says Lacroce. “These activities encourage students to embrace diversity, empathy, and unity, which are essential values both in and out of the classroom.”

CLARENCE BAYNE:  The EMSB Council of Commissioners expressed their sincere condolences over the passing of Dr. Clarence Bayne. He was also a professor and lecturer at Concordia University, a founding member of the Black Studies Centre and Black Theatre Workshop in the early 1970s and  was part of a group that pushed for then-mayor Jean Doré to recognize Black History Month in Montreal. Dr. Bayne held a lifelong dedication to championing the rights and voices of the English-speaking Black community in Quebec

YOUTH STARS: The Montreal Kids Basketball League Program, organized with Youth Stars,  offers a fantastic opportunity for students to enhance their basketball skills while enjoying a fun and supportive environment. This year the  Youth Stars Ballers program will help participants elevate their games! This year, we’re putting a strong focus on gameplay, offering kids the opportunity to participate in 10 exciting games. Coached by their experienced staff, each game is videotaped for players to review and parents to enjoy. Plus, every participant receives a Youth Stars Ballers jersey with registrations. Sign up now and take your skills to the next level  at www.YouthStars.org

KIDS HELP PHONE: As the school year begins,  Kids Help Phone (an organization that seeks to offer mental health education, support and resources to youth across Canada) wishes to make sure all students are supported in their mental and emotional well-being. They are reaching out to  schools to invite them to participate in their free, school-based program, Counsellor in the Classroom.   Info here.

ADULT EDUCATION AND VOCATIONAL SERVICES

The Shadd team hits the water.

SHADD'S DRAGON BOAT RACE: The 19th annual  BDO Cedars CanSupport Dragon Boat Race took place on Saturday, September 7 in Lachine. A total of 650  paddlers  from all across Montreal and all walks of life, raced to raise money for Cedars CanSupport, an organization that provides free, bilingual, support services to people who are undergoing cancer treatments at the MUHC, as well as to their family members. One of the teams was from the EMSB's Shadd Health and Business Centre in NDG. The SHADD/Baton Rouge Firebreathers raised close to $15,000 in 2023.  This year they decided to aim a little higher and brought in $19,175.  Teacher John Millar, one of the organizers, says he hopes the donations don’t stop there! They can be sent in until  December 31 by visiting the Cedars Cancer  Foundation website at  https://www.cedars.ca/en and donating to the team.

The Shadd team shown here before they hit the water.

The crew of Shadd students from the  accounting and PAB programs were the driving engine of the  boat. "Although we finished last, the students realized that teamwork and supporting cancer patients was of real educational value," said Mr. Millar. "Thanks to a comedy show in early May by Joe Cacchione and the generous donation from Domenic Aversa and his Baton Rouge restaurants, we were able to surpass our goal."

Everyone had a terrific time at the reunion.

PIUS REUNION: Nicolino Iannotti, Phil Carmosino and Paolo Fratarcangeli report that on June 15, alumni from St. Pius X Comprehensive High School, Class of 1990, held a memorable evening, bringing together about 40 alumni for a wonderful reunion. It was held at Usine Grecque Souvlaki in Vaudreuil, where Mr. Carmosino graciously hosted with delicious food, drinks and a warm and inviting atmosphere. Angelo Palermo (Dynamic DJ) was the animated DJ for the evening and provided fantastic music that kept the energy high throughout the night. It was a pleasure to reconnect with old friends, catch up and reminisce about our high school days. Frank Kermit kicked off the dinner with a heartfelt speech and a moment to remember those alumni who were no longer with us. Later in the evening Stefania Freda entertained us with a rendition of Total Eclipse of the Heart and O Sole Mio. The evening then continued with many laughs and dancing.

MATH ANXIETY: The principal of John F. Kennedy Adult Education Centre (JFKAC), Elizabeth Lagodich,  wishes to share her comments on the topic of   math anxiety and trauma   as it pertains to adult learners. “Our Centre has recently embarked on a campaign to raise awareness about how we effectively address math anxiety and trauma among adult learners,” she says. “Many of our students come to us with negative experiences from their previous academic journeys, carrying what we refer to as ‘negative math baggage.’ However, through a supportive environment, dedicated teachers, and a strong community, we have been able to transform these challenges into inspiring success stories. I believe there is a significant opportunity to explore this topic further, particularly focusing on adult learners and the role of public education centers in Montreal. Our efforts have not only helped individuals overcome their fears but have also highlighted the potential of adult education to change lives.  Unfortunately, these successes often go unrecognized, and there is a persistent bias against adult education that I continually challenge.

A teacher at JFKAC works with a student on math problems.

JFKAC is launching an innovative program (Sequoia) designed to help young adults who struggled with math in high school. This new initiative specifically targets students who experienced math anxiety and trauma, which prevented them from graduating with their high school cohort. At this time of the year, many parents are facing the challenge of supporting their adult children who didn't complete high school due to math difficulties. “Our program offers a solution by creating a specialized cohort for students recommended by high school guidance counselor,” she says.  “These students typically have math skills well below grade level because of their anxiety and negative experiences with math. This story will  resonate with countless parents who are concerned about their children's future and are looking for ways to help them move forward in life. The program provides a second chance for these young adults to overcome their math challenges and achieve their educational goals.  By addressing math anxiety and trauma head-on, we are offering hope to families and opening doors for students who may have thought their educational journey was over. This is a compelling narrative that showcases how adult education can transform lives and provide new opportunities for those who struggled in traditional high school settings.

JANUARY 27, 2021 EDITION / VOLUME 23 NUMBER 6/ THE OFFICIAL BULLETIN OF THE EMSB (MIKE COHEN, EDITOR/MANON BOURASSA, TRANSLATION)

A Kindergarten class at Michelangelo International School in RDP.

PILOT PROJECT FOR REGISTRATION:
Elementary School Registration Week for the 2021-2022 academic will take place from Monday, February 1 to Friday, February 5. If one child from a family is already enrolled in a particular school, a sibling registration period will take place a week earlier. This year five schools took part in a pilot project whereby parents had to book a registration appointment online as of Monday, January 25 at 7 am. They were: Royal Vale in NDG, Merton in Côte Saint-Luc,   Edinburgh in Montreal West; Gardenview in St. Laurent; and East Hill in Rivière-des-Prairies.  Over the years these schools have had long lineups, some starting days before registration occurred. The project was a success.

Listen to our podcast with guests Liboria Amato from East Hill and Rosana Caplan.

REGISTRATION PROCESS: The proper COVID-19 safety protocols will be followed for all schools when parents enter the building to submit the necessary documentation. All pupils registering for the first time are required to provide a birth certificate and vaccination records to the school the child will be attending. Parents will be asked to fill out forms which will allow the school to apply for the certificate of eligibility for English schooling. Under the Charter of the French Language, a certificate of eligibility is generally granted to children who did the majority of their elementary or secondary studies in English in Canada; whose mother or father did the majority of his/her elementary studies in English in Canada or whose brother or sister did the majority of his/her elementary or secondary studies in English in Canada. As a result of language legislation, this criteria excludes studies completed in the Quebec Private School system. Parents are asked to register at the EMSB elementary school nearest their residence offering the French program of their choice. For more information please call (514) 483-7200, extension EMSB (3672) or log on to the Board’s website at www.emsb.qc.ca.

KINDERGARTEN AMBASSADORS: For this year’s EMSB Elementary School Registration Week, we would like to introduce you to our three Kindergarten Ambassadors: Mia Fanzolato from Our Lady of Pompei Elementary School in Ahuntsic; Maharli Musgrave from St. Monica Elementary School in NDG and Yebom Suh from St. Gabriel Elementary School in Pointe St. Charles.  Their images will appear on promotional billboards and information flyers.

ADVERTISING  CAMPAIGN: The EMSB Communications and Marketing Division embarked upon a high profile marketing campaign in January  to promote Elementary School Registration,  following up on a equally successful fall blitz for virtual open houses. Below you can listen to and see some of the commercials.

BILLBOARDS:  The EMSB also placed large billboards in RDP, St. Laurent and NDG.

AIR PURIFIERS: Despite information released by the Quebec Public Health Department that the installation of portable air ventilators in classrooms is not recommended, the EMSB stands behind its decision to proceed with the installation of this equipment in 30 buildings which do not have mechanical ventilation systems. The EMSB Material Resources Department undertook an extensive assessment of all 55 buildings, which house schools and adult and vocational education services.

The installation process has now been completed, one month ahead of schedule. “We did our due diligence before making this decision,” stated EMSB Chair Joe Ortona. “We are confident that the type of air purifiers purchased, their specifications - including low noise- and their permanent installation in classrooms, respond to the concerns raised by Dr. Richard Massé from Public Health during Minister Roberge’s press conference. We will ensure that the other mitigation measures in classrooms, such as the wearing of face-coverings and natural ventilation where feasible, will be maintained in order to reduce the risk of transmission of COVID-19 as much as possible.”

Vice-President Harris  is sworn in.

VICE-PRESIDENT KAMALA HARRIS:   While the big party took place in Washington D.C. on January 20, the students and staff at Westmount High School held a special celebration as one of their own, Kamala Harris, was sworn in as the 49th Vice President of the United States.  To mark the historic day, while respecting all COVID-19 protocols, Westmount High School students   streamed the inauguration in their classes. Students   also created a commemorative video, which they will share with the community. The school also received items from the United States Consulate General in Montreal to mark the occasion.

At the age of 12, Kamala temporarily relocated to Montreal while her mother, Shyamala Gopalan Harris, took a job teaching at McGill University and did research at the Jewish General Hospital. While living in Montreal, Kamala attended FACE School for one year before attending Westmount High School from 1978 until her graduation in 1981. The EMSB and Westmount High School are preparing an official invitation to Vice President Harris to visit her alma-mater during her time in office.

TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK: A big thank you to all of our Teachers. The first two weeks of February are marked as Teacher Appreciation Week in Quebec and Canada.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH: Given the many high profile acts of racial violence in 2020,  Black History Month activities scheduled at the EMSB for February will take on even more significance. At a Council of Commissioners meeting in December, the EMSB adopted a formal resolution to formally recognize Back History Month. Though schools observe Black History Month every year, EMSB Chair  Joe Ortona, says this year is particularly important. “There were a number of events that occurred that make us seriously reflect on issues of race,” he commented.  “Though many of the more widely reported events took place in the US, we have issues here as well. These tragedies spark outrage among all people and all over the world. We are witnessing a coming-together of people to denounce racial injustice, and we wanted to show our commitment by voting on and passing a resolution, which we did unanimously.” Stay tuned for our complete press release coming soon on the EMSB website.

LIFE UNREHEARSED AND SIMON CHANG: Hosts Matt Del Vecchio  and Corrie Sirota had fashion icon Simon Chang on their CJAD program Life Unrehearsed. Simon spoke about a number of his philanthropic initiatives via the Simon Chang Foundation for Change.  This includes his collaboration with Inspirations Newspaper. You can listen to it here

PARENT WORKSHOPS: Chabad Lifeline and the EMSB Student Services Department are organizing a series of important free online workshops in February. The subjects are: Angry Teens and the Nervous System, Communication & Boundaries,Teens and Technology and Participants Choice. The aim  is to  create a space for parents to reach out and receive psycho-education and support and to strengthen family relationships through parental support and understanding. For registration details click here.

COVID CASES: From the start of the current academic year until January 5, 2021,  EMSB records show that among the 37,000 students and staff, 533 have tested positive for COVID-19.  That represents   a rate of 1.44 percent.

FACE PRODUCES VIRTUAL CONCERTS:   Following the lockdown last March, FACE School’s students and music teachers were devastated that the traditional series of instrumental and vocal concerts at the end of the year could not take place. Desperate to reconnect with her string students and eager to provide motivation for them by making music together, string department teacher Theodora Stathopoulos launched a virtual orchestra project in May 2020 that she named “A Ray of Sunshine.” The pilot project was a great success and has attracted close to 1,000 views since June 2020.

The restrictions in the schools, due to the pandemic, continued at the beginning of the 2020-2021 academic year and instrumental music was put to a halt with minimal performance opportunities. Stathopoulos launched the Virtual Orchestra Project anew with an objective to involve more students and produce two concerts: one in January 2021 and another at the end of the year. In spite of the fact that participation in this project is voluntary, over 40 string students from Grades 5 to 11 responded to the call to participate in September 2020. The students were placed in a “virtual” orchestra of their technical level regardless of their age or grade. Following orchestra, the students were provided with a pre-recorded track of their part and were given several weeks to practice using it with occasional support from teacher and/or a tutor, if required. When they had learned their part the participating students had to record themselves and send the recording for montage.  The montage of the individual recordings is a long and difficult phase of the virtual orchestra process and requires additional tech support.

The You Tube videos of FACE’s virtual orchestras are already going viral, such as this one.

Students enjoy the great outdoors.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION OUTDOORS:  Working with nature and incorporating the outdoors and physical education activities, Cycle II students at St. Gabriel Elementary School in Pointe St. Charles have taken snowshoeing as part of the curriculum.  This was financed via   the Keep Active Fund. Meanwhile, St. Gabriel is introducing students to a fun recreational activity that is part of our Canadian heritage. Snowshoeing is a great cardiovascular activity that keeps our students warm even on the coldest winter days.

DIVERSE MINDS:  B’nai Brith Canada is proud to launch Diverse Minds 2020/21, its educational initiative that promotes diversity and teaches valuable lessons of inclusion to both elementary and high school students.  Since 1875, B'nai Brith has led the fight for human rights and equality in Canada - and we are proud to constantly be promoting this cause in new and exciting ways.  The Diverse Minds Creative Writing competition invites high school students to reflect on the value of a society rooted in mutual respect, by writing and illustrating a story aimed at elementary school students (Kindergarten - Grade 5).  This contest is about peer-to-peer learning and recognizing that students will lead the way in creating school communities where diversity is embraced. The goal of Diverse Minds is to empower our youth to become role models for each other and understand that their impact reaches beyond their classrooms. Two students from  Royal West Academy in Montreal West were winners in the 2020 competition.

The winning book in each region will be published in a colourful hardcover format and distributed to all local elementary schools and public libraries. Cash prizes will be awarded for the first place English, first place French, second  and third place books, and the Top 10 Finalists will be celebrated at an awards ceremony next September. Info: https://bnaibrith.ca/diverseminds.

PEARSON ETUDES: Lester B. Pearson High School’s Sport-études program is proud to announce that recent graduate Benjamin Collins, Class of 2019, has committed to Cornell University starting in August 2021. Benjamin has received a scholarship from the Ivy League school. He will be studying in the field of Biomedical Engineering and playing with their NCAA Division 1 men’s varsity soccer team.

SPIRIT OF GIVING:  CTV Montreal has extended a big thank you to the EMSB and everyone involved for making 2020’s virtual campaign a great success! “Our strategy had to change quite a bit for this edition of the Spirit of Giving, where as in past years, food drives were the main focus,” a CTV statement reads. “Considering it was a first real attempt at driving all our efforts to online donations, we consider this year’s efforts a huge success. These funds will be evenly divided among our 10 deserving recipients.  The charity partners are thrilled as these funds give them exponentially much more buying power than receiving canned goods: Batshaw; Share the Warmth; West Island Assistance Fund; Sun Youth; Renaissance; Nazareth House; La Mosaique; MultiCaf; NDG Food Depot; and Mile End Mission.

ANNUAL REPORT: The EMSB Annual Report and the Commitment to Success was presented to the public via Zoom on January14.

Honoré-Mercier School students "rise above."

RISE ABOVE: During the month of January, students from Nesbitt  and Honoré Mercier Elementary, Schools and Rosemount High School have been participating in a two-part workshop called “Rise Above.” The program was created and is being facilitated by Spiritual Community Animator Vince Lacroce. Part One focused on wellness and the importance of living a healthy lifestyle, and provide tools to increase confidence and positive self-image, as well as manage stress through breathing exercises, awareness, and meditation. Part Two focuses on the philosophy of minimalism, decluttering, and valuing experiences over material possessions. “The hope for students to develop their skills in self-regulation and self-efficacy, while deepening their understanding of their values, beliefs, and relationship to the community.” said Mr. Lacroce. “With the support of the virtues program, students will be challenged to take inventory of their possessions and will create a list of what is truly valuable to them. Their lists will be shared in an open discussion and will be compared to findings across the globe.  This project aims to encourage students to appreciate the little things in life that money can’t buy.”

SHARING LIGHT OF HOPE: Former EMSB student and Montreal Police Cadet  Marco Cerroni teamed up with family friend, Spiritual Community Animator  Rocco Speranza, to spread the true meaning of the holidays with a visit to Le Phare Enfant et Familles. After hearing the story of terminally ill seven year old Noah Mercier, whose dream was to become a police officer, Mr. Cerroni was reminded of himself at that age with the same dream of being a police officer. Mr. Cerroni, who is blessed to be living his dream, wanted to share some joy with Noah and the patients at Le Phare. Mr. Speranza reached out to Montreal Emergency Services and Santa Claus, to help make Noah’s dream come true. Noah was made an honorary SPVM police chief and honorary constable of various units, receiving his own cap and badges.

East Hill students take part in the program.

OPERATION GINGERBREAD DRIVE:  Before the holiday break, seven EMSB schools (John F. Kennedy, East Hill School, Edward Murphy School, LINKS, Royal Vale and St Gabriel), connected through SCAs Rocco Speranza and Paolo Ruscito to collect shoes, socks, hygiene products, and more for their school and local communities, and prepared over 1600 sandwiches for those in need. Various community groups lent support to the project. In addition, Pia Dibacco and her special angels from Our Lady of Pompei School Daycare, Principal Lisa Ancona and the school community created 100 peace care packages while two wonderful students Marianne and Catherine Fleury-Ross made 100 face masks to contribute to the cause.  Non-violent toys were also collected for shelters this year. In the end, Operation Gingerbread Drive provided 300 students and families with care packages and holiday cheer.

JFK's collection of boxes.

JFK FOOD DRIVE: With the ongoing pandemic community resources have been stretched to capacity.  The team at John F Kennedy High School in St. Michel decided they were going to do their part to help ease the load on local food banks and charities.  The team began meeting in October and started collecting donations at the beginning of November.   The team started the project with the goal of providing at least $100 worth of products to the families. With the help from the JFK and LMAC communities,  as well as over 30 corporate and community donors,  the team was able to create baskets that were estimated at a value of $300.   Overall they created 40 baskets for needy families (36 JFK and four LMAC,  as well as we were able to provide food to St. Brendan’s Parish, Second Chance Café, and The Old Brewery Mission Patricia Mackenzie Pavillion.  Families from the EMSB's Edward Murphy, LINKS, and Our Lady of Pompei schools.

MOURNING SUSAN CLARK:  The EMSB is mourning the passing of Susan Clarke (right), an original commissioner for NDG dating back to 1998. She eventually moved on to become a Montreal city councillor for the NDG Loyola District.

REGIONAL SCIENCE FAIR: The 2021 Montreal Regional Science & Technology  Fair, cancelled last year due to the pandemic, will take place virtually March 28 to 31. Canada-Wide Science Fair, the country’s largest annual youth science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) event, will take place May 17 to 21, 100 per cent virtually and with its original focus on the Ottawa region. Youth Science Canada, organizers of the event  made the  announcement recently. Today organizers confirmed the dates.

LIVING THROUGH COVID SONG:  David Eves, a music teacher at Elizabeth Ballantyne Elementary School in Montreal West, has produced a song called Living Through COVID.  He even had students from Grades 3  to 6, including Evan Hernandez and MacKenzie Bode, write a verse. They also contributed some self-portraits. You can view it here

John Caboto Academy students were busy reading.

READING WEEK: John Caboto Academy in Ahuntsic celebrated the end of 2020 with a school wide event focused on Literacy.  Lights, Camera, Read!  It involved having students participate in daily reading activities.  Students from all grades  created a Book Wall of Fame, helped make a school wide literacy song and music video, watched virtual plays put on by theatre companies, had a reading in the dark (with flashlights) activity in class and more. Prizes were awarded to students for different competitions and parents also got involved by submitting photos of students reading at home.  The week was planned and led by a team of teachers to promote a love for reading. You can see their song from this Facebook post. Indigo shared it on all of its platforms.

PROFILE ON CORONATION TEACHER: Montreal Community Contact Editor Egbert Gaye recently filed this lovely profile on Coronation Elementary School teacher Betty Constant. We will include some of text, followed by a direct link.

Betty Constant

After more than a quarter-century standing in front of her class at Coronation Elementary School in Côte des Neiges, today, Ms. Betty Constant remains as passionate in sharing her love for the French language with her students as she was in September 1993, her first day on the job. And there’s a reason why she hasn’t left the neighborhood. “I love the community and the relationship that I’ve had with the children and their parents over the years. Also, they need representation,” she says, switching effortlessly from English to French and back. She teaches the French Immersion kindergarten class of 5-to-6 year-olds.

Mme. Constant, who earned her Bachelor’s of French Second Language Teaching at the University of Quebec at Montreal, started teaching under the guidance of Ms. Beverly Townsend, the iconic principal of the school when it was located on Vezina Street. She says over the past decade and a half, she has had the privilege of witnessing generational change at the school and in the area. In speaking to Mme Constant about her 26 years as a French Immersion teacher at a school that has strong links with our community, the one thing most evident is her lingering passion for the job as well as for her students, parents, and fellow educators. A truly safe way to do fencing.

FENCING PROVIDES EMOTIONAL RELEASE:   Recently, teachers virtually attended a workshop offered by Eva de Gosztonyi of the Centre of Excellence for Behaviour Management. The theme was  Understanding the Emotional World of Our Children in COVID Times: How it Affects their Behaviour and What Can We Do to Help Them.   Marlyn Carolina  Martinez, a teacher at LINKS High School in Ahuntsic, honed in on one particular theme called “Emotional Release Through Play.” One such idea from the workshop was using pool noodles as drumsticks or as playful swords. So, they ordered a large box of noodles as some of classes at LINKS were eager to try the activities. Furthermore, Ms. Martinez incorporated her personal love and experience with fencing as her medium to reduce any stress and anxiety her students may be feeling. “This year has been an unprecedented one for both teachers and students,” she said. “Such stress can affect not only their academic work, but their mental health as well. Fencing has a long history and is currently part of the Olympics, so when I introduced it to the MAP (Modified Academic Program) students, they were thrilled. We're a month into the sport and they are as enthused as they were at the start. They have learned the techniques and rules of the sport in the pursuit of having an authentic and safe match against one another and as an unconventional yet successful means of releasing emotion through play.”

VIRTUAL LEARNING AT LINKS:  LINKS High School offers alternative programs, including CASP, TEACCH, DEFIS, MAP and WOTP.  While their teaching methods, strategies and interventions may be adapted to the special needs of students, the goals are always consistent and focused.  The hopes and dreams of the students, their families, teachers and support staff mirror that of any teenager or young adult. Consequently, when schools, as well as most organizations, were pivoting to virtual platforms, LINKS students were not going to be left behind.  Not only were academic and vocational realities changing, but social and leisure activities were transitioning online as well. Students needed to navigate this new form of communicating and learning and maintain contact with the outside world or they would face isolation and all its ramifications.  Students have learned how to use the online tools on more than one platform, as well as the relevant rules and etiquette required for a safe and respectful experience.  In addition they have learned to read their schedules and find an appropriate space at home.

ITALIAN EXHIBITION:  In the early 20th century, a new wave of European immigrants made its way to Quebec and to Montreal. Among them were thousands of Italians who brought with them their traditions, their values, and their customs, going on to form one of the oldest and largest immigrant cultural communities in Montreal. Showcasing the community’s important contribution to economic, social, and cultural life in Montreal—as well as its ingenuity, talent, and resilience—Pointe-à-Callière is presenting the exhibition Italian Montréal. This exhibition will shine a spotlight on the daily lives of Montreal’s earliest Italian immigrants and on the ways in which the community has evolved over the past century—with a quarter of a million Montrealers today describing themselves as having Italian roots.

For this exhibition, Pointe-à-Callière mainly turned to Montrealers for loans of their family treasures: items brought over from Italy or made here—celebrating the way life was lived in the past. Also on display will be objects illustrating various culinary traditions (of course), as well as others highlighting various iconic businesses, important events, and members of the community who made their mark in the arts, business, sports, and public life. Historical photographs, audiovisual documents, and archival materials will be used to punctuate the often moving and memorable moments in the lives of the first generations of immigrants. The Museum has put together an exhibition that takes an in-depth look at Italo-Montrealers, putting human beings at the center of the story and highlighting the community members’ remarkable contributions to Montreal life. Through the use of projections, audiovisual material, and dramatic backdrops, this exhibition promises to take you to the very heart of the community’s actions and accomplishments in every field of endeavor. In particular, the exhibition will focus on five iconic areas that defined and still characterize this community: work on the railroad and in the construction sector; the café as a preferred spot for socializing; the home and its culinary traditions; the church as a place of meeting and association; and of course, the public sphere, in which so many Italo-Montrealers have distinguished themselves.  Info: https://pacmusee.qc.ca/en/

BRINGING ARTS TO STUDENTS: In 2018 the Secrétariat aux relations avec les Québécois d’expression anglaise (Government of Quebec) invested $950,000 in grants specifically to English-speaking groups in Quebec. One of the recipients of those funds was ELAN – English Language Arts Network, who invested in their ACE program, which included bringing arts to the students. English-speaking artists bring dance, music, film, literary and visual arts, and more to students and community members to foster innovation and imagination. You can find more information on the ACE program here  and contact them to develop an ACE project at: ace-initiative@quebec-elan.org.

ADULT EDUCATION AND VOCATIONAL SERVICES CENTRES

Wagar students work in the large Maxi warehouse.

GROCERY PROJECT:  A new pilot project at the Wagar Adult Education Centre in Côte Saint-Luc, resulting from a partnership with Giant Steps, the Transforming Autism Care Consortium (TACC), Weston, and the federal government, has been deemed an instant success.  Known as the Polaris Enterprise initiative, nine Wagar students, ranging in age from 21 to 62, are enrolled in an intensive nine-month bilingual work training program. Students meet daily with a Wagar teacher and two job coaches as they integrate and prepare them for future employment opportunities within the retail and supermarket distribution centre setting.  In addition to the theoretical training in the classroom, students are able to practice working the cash or stocking the shelves thanks to the installation of a mini-supermarket in one corner of the Wagar cafeteria. There are even virtual reality goggles students can wear to fully immerse themselves in the store. Other highlights of the program include online workshops, guest speakers, and an internship at a Maxi store or one of two distribution centres. If all goes well, a job offer with full pay and benefits may be given. Media coverage continues to grow.

The sensory room.

SAFETY FIRST: Since  the Galileo Adult Education Center in Montreal North has welcomed back their Social Integration Service  (SIS) and The Socio-Vocational Integration Services (SVIS) students, the focus of teachers and staff has been the safety and security of all. Incorporating and reinforcing health rules has become part of the daily practice and remains a priority at the school. Students responded to these new directives with resilience and tremendous effort. However, during the month of November the school realized that the students would greatly benefit from their sensory room to help cope with the many changes that COVID-19 set upon them. The secure re-opening of the room soon became a priority for the mental health of the students - now more than ever. A sensory room can help deal with both stress and anxiety, two conditions affecting many individuals during the COVID-19 pandemic.

After careful planning and organization, the SVIS team with the help of students, made it possible to use this room once again! By allowing students to use it, they were able to observe and note the adaptations that were needed in order to keep the environment in line with health and safety guidelines. SIS students practiced keeping the room clean by disinfecting all the equipment used during their visit to the room. SVIS students have been wonderful role models to others by demonstrating that we are all responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of the room for everyone to continue to benefit from it. Some of the new protocols that we have applied include limiting the use of the room to one class per day and allowing a 24-hour ventilation period before another class (bubble) enters. In addition, the number of visitors allowed in the room at once is limited to eight (seven students/one staff) and everyone must wear a new blue medical mask in addition to disinfecting their hands upon entering the room. While not all sections of the room are being used because of Covid-19 risks, students do have access to a weighted bag, vibrating pillows, rocking chairs, and mats, which are all wiped down and disinfected daily by the class.

The relaxing music, soothing lights and imagery all positively contribute towards students’ mental health and wellbeing. This room allows students to refocus their energy from stress, anxiety, fear, anger and sadness to regaining control of their emotions and calming their thoughts.  Since the re-opening of the sensory room, we have had overwhelming success with the participation from our classes.  Students look forward to their time to unwind and escape into an environment that inspires tranquility and a sense of freedom.
