25th ANNIVERSARY: The 2023-24 academic year marks the 25th anniversary since the Quebec government recreated public school boards along linguistic, rather than religious lines. The EMSB looks forward to celebrating this milestone with stakeholders. See our special commemorative logo, designed by Emine Arslan. This anniversary was formally marked on the first day of classes at Carlyle Elementary in TMR. POLITICAL UPDATE MEETING: Shortly before being welcomed by more than 300 excited students and staff at Carlyle Elementary School in the Town of Mount Royal (TMR) on the first day of school, Mr. Ortona, led a brief but important meeting. Mr. Ortona, along with Mayor Malouf, Ms. Setlakwe, Commissioner Israel, the Director General and ADGs covered a spate of key topics crossing education, political and other lines. They talked about the state of education in Quebec, the teacher challenge and court challenges.
EMSB EXPRESS: The fall edition of the EMSB Express Newspaper has been published. It includes an overview of high school open houses, messages from the Director General and Chair, the youth sector calendar, a special section recognizing volunteers, another special section on “gifted and exceptional” learners, sports and more. CELL PHONES IN CLASSES: In response to the Minister of Education’s announcement that cellular phones will not be permitted in classrooms, EMSB officials responded to numerous media requests. EMSB high schools already have such protocols in place in different formats while this is not a particular issue at the primary level.

STUDENT OF THE MONTH: Mackay Centre School Grade 6 student Ella Huot-Attia is the EMSB Student of the Month for September. Ella loves to dance. The 12-year-old, who uses a wheelchair, will be quick to correct anyone who says she used to be a dancer. “I am still a dancer,” Ella told Global News. interrupting her own mother during a press conference at the Montreal Children’s Hospital last week. But reaching the point where Ella can say that with confidence hasn’t been easy. She credits the hospital’s music therapy program for helping her. “I love to dance but when I stopped it kind of broke me,” she said, “but when I started music therapy I learned to dance in my wheelchair and find alternatives to dancing.” Some of those skills were on display Tuesday when Ella gave a heartfelt performance at the hospital of a song she’d written herself called Let The Sunshine In. Ella was only six years old when she was diagnosed with episodic ataxia. It’s a rare genetic condition that causes problems with walking, moving and balancing. It also comes with bouts of nerve and muscle pain and numerous hospital stays. See this story
BILL 40 VICTORY: The Quebec English School Boards Association (QESBA) is thrilled with the decision rendered in late July by the Quebec Superior Court Justice Sylvain Lussier upholding QESBA’s challenge of many sections of Bill 40, An Act to amend mainly the Education Act with regard to school organization and governance. QESBA challenged the legislation and was awarded a stay in 2020, which was confirmed by three judges of the Québec Court of Appeal later that year. The Quebec Superior Court heard the case on its merits in 2021. It has now delivered a sweeping judgment, concluding that many provisions of Bill 40 are unconstitutional because they breach section 23 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The judgment takes into account decades of jurisprudence regarding minority language education rights in Québec and throughout Canada. The QESBA, and member boards like the EMSB ,was successful in obtaining a declaration that a number of requirements are unconstitutional . You can find all of the details here.

BACK FROM BC: After three years of postponement, the EMSB Chorale was thrilled to finally participate in the International Choral Kathaumixw Festival in Powell River, BC. during the first week of July. The chorale was only the second choir from Quebec to be invited in the festival’s 40-year history. Performing a program of mostly Quebec music and composers, the choir also had the opportunity to hear many other wonderful adult and youth choirs from throughout North America, learn new repertoire and to sing and socialize with the 1,200 other choristers. In addition, the weather was beautiful and the scenery along BC’s sunshine coast was breathtaking. The choir was also delighted to receive a visit from Nicholas Simons, a member of BC’s legislative assembly for Sunshine Coast-Powell River. Mr. Simons, originally from Montreal, is a member of the musical Simons family of CAMMAC Music Centre fame, where the music staff of the chorale have been teaching for years. The chorale will start its 44th season on Saturday, Sept. 9 and looks forward to welcoming new members. Students from Grades 4 to Secondary V are eligible to join. In addition to its December and May concerts, exciting upcoming collaborative projects for the Senior Chorale (high school students) include performing Carmina Burana with the McGill University Choirs and a special guest appearance with the Arion Baroque Orchestra at Bourgie Hall. As of Sept. 16, EMSB Chorale conductor Pat Abbott will be hosting a weekly radio show on choral music on Radio Ville-Marie (91.3 in Montreal), the French-language station that offers programming on human, social, cultural and spiritual affairs. The show will air Saturdays at 7 p.m. and Sundays at 7 a.m. Radio VM also broadcasts in Sherbrooke, Trois-Rivières, Victoriaville and Rimouski, as well as on the web.

EDUCATION AND CAREER FAIR: More than 2,000 Secondary V students will attend the 23rd annual English Montreal School Board Career Fair on Wednesday, October 25 and Thursday, October 26 at St. Pius X Career Centre in Ahuntsic (9955 Papineau). Jack Dym of Pipe and Piling Supplies Ltd is the event’s title sponsor. Several on air personalities from the media will be on hand to talk to students about careers in this field and serve as guest emcees. From 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on October 25, the Education and Career Fair will be open to the community-at-large. Organizers note that this is a good opportunity for parents to attend with their children (Grades 9, 10 and 11) as they look towards post-secondary education options in a one-stop shopping experience. There is no charge and free parking. Mario Argiropoulos from EMSB Adult Education and Vocational Services is the Education and Career Fair chair. The Student Services and AEVS Departments of the EMSB coordinate this program. The main objective is to provide students with an in-depth exposure to the various educational opportunities available to them. All students will take part in a brief general information session in the St. Pius X auditorium. Students will then have the chance to visit the various exhibition/information booths staffed by representatives from English vocational centres, CEGEPS, universities and some private business colleges.
THE SUBURBAN: As you may be aware, news outlets from Canada are now being fully blocked on Facebook and Instagram in response to the Canadian government’s Online News Act. Google is planning a similar approach. In Montreal, the Métro Média group recently announced that it was suspending the operations of its weekly newspapers, most of which serve communities where our schools are located. The Suburban has gained the distinction of being Quebec’s largest English weekly newspaper for the past 60 years. Now is the time to support local news and register for a free online subscription. HOLOCAUST EDUCATION: Last year the EMSB obtained a one-time Nova grant from the Jewish Community Foundation of Montreal to undertake a Holocaust education program. Thanks to this funding, many school trips were arranged to the Montreal Holocaust Museum with survivors as guest speakers as well as a number of school-based programs. Thanks to the generosity of some donors, the EMSB will be able to run a program again this year. More notably, young Montreal businessman Henry Zavriyev has made a special allocation for five East End high schools : Laurier Macdonald, Lester B. Pearson, Rosemount, Vincent Massey and John F. Kennedy.

YAD VASHEM EXPERIENCE: Sandra Banon, a Cycle 3 French teacher at St. Monica Elementary School in NDG, and Samantha Page Smith, a Spiritual and Community Animator at Westmount High, St. Monica, Hampstead, and John Grant High School,were selected to take part in the 2023 Canadian Society for Yad Vashem Holocaust Educators Scholarship program in Israel this past July along with dozens of other educators from across Canada. Ms. Banon took part in the two-week seminar in French, while Ms. Smith took part in the English. They attended lectures and workshops at the International School for Holocaust Studies (ISHS) where educators are taught to bring their students safely in and safely out of the learning environment with the provision of age and level appropriate materials to aid the learning process. The ISHS uses an interdisciplinary approach to Holocaust education - through art, music, literature, theology and drama - to provide students a broader understanding of what happened during this period. They will now bring their applied knowledge to St. Monica (and others) in the year ahead.
GENOCIDE GUIDE: The Foundation for Genocide Education (FGE) is a non-profit organization based in Montreal. The mission of the FGE is to ensure that the history of the Holocaust and other genocides is taught to every high school student across Canada. The FGE is the driving force behind the Quebec Education Ministry’s new unique guide on genocide called Studying Genocide which is available in both English and French to every high school teacher in Quebec (history, ethics, and languages), reaching over 300,000 students. We have also produced video testimonials from survivors and promotional and instructional videos to promote awareness of the guide. Pedagogical workshops are also offered to teachers. The FGE also offers a school presentation program featuring survivors and children and grandchildren of survivors of genocide, who share their stories with students in Secondary III, IV and V.

QUEBEC VIRTUAL ACADEMY: Quebec Virtual Academy is returning for the 2023-2024 academic year. Students from across the province with English eligibility, and who meet the criteria established by the Ministry of Education, are now able to apply for admission for Secondary I to V. The opening of a grade level is conditional to having a sufficient number of students registered. In its first year of operation, Quebec Virtual Academy was able to meet the unique needs of its student population through flexible scheduling, ample teacher tutorials, extracurricular activity opportunities and regular follow up from the school and guidance team. Student athletes have had the opportunity to continue to train at high levels of their sport and participate in competitions and events in Ontario, British Columbia, California, and Europe. Those students with long term medical conditions have been able to focus on their unique medical treatment plans while having their needs met by accommodating them academically and socially. Students living in a rural area have been able to access courses such as Chemistry and Physics which will lead them into their academic future in line with their true passion and interest. NATIONAL STUDENT OMBUDSMAN: As of Aug. 28, a new way for managing complaints in schools was implemented across Quebec. This new process will be applied uniformly across Quebec and will replace the complaint examination procedures in place. The National Student Ombudsman, a new independent organization outside the school network, will oversee implementing this new streamlined complaint procedure. The National Student Ombudsman will conduct an impartial investigation, adhering to established protocols, to safeguard the rights of students and their parents. The National Student Ombudsman’s mandate encompasses not only preschool, elementary, and secondary education both in the public and private sector, but also home schooling, vocational training, and adult education. CHAMPIONS FOR LIFE: Last April Montreal Canadiens defenceman Michael Matheson visited St. Gabriel Elementary School in Pointe St. Charles on behalf of the Champions for Life Foundation. See this video they recently released.
TOTE BAGS DONATION: Thanks to a generous donation from the employees of SAP, students from St. Gabriel School (600 rue Dublin) in Pointe St. Charles will have all the school supplies they need to begin the year on the right foot. Employees from SAP packed 100 unique kits and will have the chance to present them to the students on Thursday, September 7 at 10:30 am. Each kit includes supplies for students to use in the classroom and lunchroom. Packed in a reusable tote bag, students will receive: a lunch box, a meal container, reusable utensils reusable straws, a straw cleaner, and a water bottle. For the classroom, they will receive an eco-co-pen, labels, six small notebooks, permanent markers, pencils, stencils and coloured paper. Additionally, the school will be given excess supplies, should students run out throughout the year.
PROGRAM MILE END: For the 2023-24 academic year, Programme Mile End High in Côte des Neiges has added Secondary III classes.
PLANS FOR SPECIALIZED SCHOOL: A one year consultation is underway regarding a proposal to open a new special needs school in the Nesbitt building in Rosemount. This period will end on June 20, 2024. Special board meetings will subsequently be scheduled in the fall of 2024, at which time the consulted partners will be able to share the highlights of their briefs before a final decision is made by the Council of Commissioners. This proposal came about as a result of the needs of a growing population of students with special needs within the EMSB over the last several years. In the last six years alone, the EMSB has opened numerous self-contained groups, which include SEEDS, WINGS, Early Stimulation, Roots and Welcoming classes, in order to address the specific needs of students;
LIONS CLUB: The Montreal Autism Community Lions Club have been hard at work over the last year serving the community and raising funds for its annual school supplies donation campaign. Last year they raised funds to provide for over 175 school kits of school supplies donating them to five EMSB schools and two other "partner" schools they support, Giant Steps and Summit School. This past year they managed to raise more funds and have purchased school supplies that will benefit 300 children. To that end, at the request of EMSB administration, four EMSB schools were added as beneficiaries. . Each EMSB school will be receiving 25 tote bags full of school supplies.

PRIDE ACTIVITIES: The EMSB embraced Pride Month in June, with a number of schools organizing activities. You can see all of the details here
BOYS AT RISK OF SEXTORTION (CTV REPORT): Experts are raising the alarm over an increase in threats against children based on sexual images, a tactic known as 'sextortion.' "I would say the most common ages that are targeted are 15 to 17-year-olds. But in the last few months, we're seeing younger and younger children targeted for sextortion," says Signy Arnason, associate executive director at the Canadian Centre for Child Protection (C3P). We've seen 20 per cent of our cases involving kids 13 and under." Canada's tip line for reporting the online sexual exploitation of children, Cybertip.ca, now receives an average of 10 sextortion reports per day. Within these cases, 91 per cent of victims are male. With the return to school around the corner, the EMSB says it is aware of the issue and has adjusted its sex-ed curriculum. The EMSB has partnered with organizations like The Canadian Child Protection Centre and Love Quebec to make lesson plans about safety online and offline. "It's teaching kids how to be safe and that what you put online is no longer yours. The more education we give, hopefully, they will make better, more informed choices as they're getting older," says Jamie Quinn, an educational consultant for EMSB. You can see the full report here.

CYCLING TO SUCCESS: For a second year in a row, Athina Galanogeorgos, assistant director of the EMSB Educational Services Department, will be participating in the Great Cycle Challenge-Canada. The big difference is that this year, she’s on team Wheel Power, joined by other members from the EMSB Educational Services Department. Wheel Power is taking part in the 2023 Great Cycle Challenge this entire month of August to fight kids’ cancer! Their riding goal is to pedal a total of 1,500 km throughout the month. They have already met their original fundraising goal of 1500$ so they have increased their personal challenge to raise $3,500. Why are they doing this? Kids should be living life, not fighting for it. But to achieve their goal, they need your help. Please support the challenge and join them in the fight against kids’ cancer by making a donation through their team page. ROAD SAFETY: Some $3.77 million was injected into Saint-Laurent this year to ensure the safety and convenience of travel on the territory, especially in school zones. This injection was announced at an ideal time, as thousands of students head back to school. Developed jointly with Ville de Montréal, the initiative includes the following work: Raising of 4 crossings and one intersection; Installation of 7 curb extensions (bulb-outs); Installation of 13 speed bumps ;Work on 4.1 kilometres of sidewalks; Upgrading of traffic lights at 16 intersections; Reconfiguration of a 1.5-kilometre section of boulevard Henri-Bourassa. In addition to this work, Saint-Laurent is intensifying its awareness campaign for motorists and improving signage on residential streets near schools with signs in the shape of a student holding a placard that reads “Attention à nos enfants!”. This awareness measure has proved effective in the past year. Like in past years, Saint-Laurent is also conducting a highly dynamic awareness campaign around the schools in collaboration with the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM), the Centre de services scolaire Marguerite-Bourgeoys and the EMSB. The objective of this campaign is to encourage the adoption of safe behaviour by children during their travels as well as by their parents, motorists, pedestrians and cyclists active in school zones. Among other things, these partners have created awareness tools including brochures, which are being handed out by the police teams from the SPVM’s poste de quartier 7 in front of approximately 15 schools in Saint-Laurent.
CANADIAN PARENTS FOR FRENCH: Canadian Parents for French Québec & Nunavut has some exciting initiatives for students: Concours d’art oratoire is a public-speaking competition for youth who are learning French as a second language; O’Poésie is a national French-language poetry contest for students in Grades 1 to 12 (CEGEP 1) enrolled in FSL programs across Canada. SHADD ON BOARD FOR DRAGON BOAT RACE: A team from the Shadd Health and Business Centre in NDG will be part of the BDO Cedars CanSupport Dragon Boat Race on Saturday, Sept. 9 (8 am to 2 pm) at Promenade Pere Marquette (2105 boulevard St. Joseph) in Lachine. Other activities throughout the day will include Zumba, Yoga and Family events. This event is crucial to help raise awareness and much needed funds for Cedars CanSupport, which has, and continues to provide, free psychological, emotional, practical and financial support to cancer patients and their families, one person at a time, for the past 30 years. The Cedars Cancer Foundation was founded in 1966 by a group of individuals in the Lebanese community, who overcame personal loss and dedicated themselves to fighting cancer and to alleviating its effects on patients of all origins and their families.
SHADD’s involvement comes through its commitment to teambuilding and involvement in the community. Participants must paddle in unison to power the dragon boat in a series of one-minute-long heats against other competitors. This is also a way to expose SHADD, showing others that it is not just a successful vocational school, but also a community contributor. “Our students are our strength,” says teacher John Millar. “The dragon boat represents the power and strong fellowship of our students. This is SHADD’s core.”With a generous contribution of $5,000, Dominic Aversa of Baton Rouge restaurants in Anjou, Laval and Greenfield Park has shown the example and encouraged the students to participate and donate. The goal of each dragon boat is to collect $15,000 in donations. “We are close, but we need your support,” said Principal Joe Cacchione. FALL APART: Anna Panunto, a teacher at the HSM Adult Centre, is presenting a play called Fall Apart: ca va bien aller on Sept 16 and 17 at Casa D’Italia at 505 Jean Talon East. It takes place during the early times of the Corona Virus ( May to July 2020) in Montreal. These were uncertain times where masks had to be disinfected in hot water, people had to cope with sudden employment loss, marriages crumbled, and mental health issues skyrocketed. At some point or other, we all fell apart during this time in recent history. Yet, this is a story of hope …. so do not let the title fool you! Anna is a teacher, freelance writer, and visual artist. In the last few decades, she has published in various languages: poetry, fiction and non-fiction short-stories, and academic articles related to education and culture. This year, she also wrote and produced a monologue short-film in Italian called, “ Il Diario Di Una Stupida.” It was showcased in Toronto and Montreal this year. She is proud to present her second theatrical production, this time, a semi-autobiographical story that takes place during the early times of the Corona Virus right here in Montreal. This play is dedicated to Dante Rossi. His steadfast support of this project will never go forgotten. There is a special $15 rate for tickets. Please see the photo for details.

PREMIER JOUR D'ÉCOLE : L'année scolaire 2023-24 marque le 25e anniversaire de la recréation par le gouvernement du Québec des commissions scolaires publiques selon des critères linguistiques plutôt que religieux. La Commission scolaire English-Montréal se réjouit à l'idée de célébrer cet anniversaire avec les parties prenantes. Cet anniversaire a été officiellement marqué le premier jour de classe à l'école primaire Carlyle de TMR. Le président de la CSEM, Joe Ortona, le directeur général Nick Katalifos, les directeurs généraux adjoints Jack Chadirjian et Pelagia Nickoletopoulos, la commissaire Ellie Israel et le directeur régional Jimmy Giannacopoulos ont assisté à une assemblée spéciale de l'école. Ils ont été rejoints par le maire Peter Malouf et la députée libérale de Mont-Royal-Outremont Michelle Setlakwe. Carlyle est une véritable histoire à succès de l'EMSB. En 2012, l'école a été fermée en raison du faible nombre d'inscriptions. La promesse de relancer le programme primaire du Baccalauréat International (IB) a convaincu le Conseil des Commissaires de maintenir l'école ouverte et la population scolaire n'a cessé de croître depuis lors.

LES TÉLÉPHONES CELLULAIRES DANS LES CLASSES : En réponse à l'annonce du ministre de l’Éducation interdisant les téléphones cellulaires dans les salles de classe, les responsables de la CSEM ont répondu à de nombreuses demandes des médias. Les écoles secondaires de la CSEM ont déjà mis en place des protocoles de ce type sous différentes formes, tandis que ce problème ne se pose pas au niveau primaire.

VICTOIRE DU PROJET DE LOI 40: L'Association des commissions scolaires anglophones du Québec (ACSAQ) se réjouit de la décision rendue à la fin du mois de juillet par le juge de la Cour supérieure du Québec, qui a confirmé la contestation initiée par l'ACSAQ de plusieurs articles du projet de loi 40, loi modifiant principalement la Loi sur l'instruction publique en matière d'organisation et de gouvernance scolaires. Ayant contesté la loi en 2020, l'ACSAQ a obtenu un sursis, lequel a été confirmé par trois juges de la Cour d'appel du Québec plus tard la même année. La Cour supérieure du Québec a entendu la cause sur le fond en 2021. Elle a désormais rendu une décision exhaustive, concluant que de nombreuses dispositions du projet de loi 40 sont inconstitutionnelles parce qu'elles enfreignent l'article 23 de la Charte canadienne des droits et libertés. La décision tient compte de décennies de jurisprudence concernant les droits à l'instruction dans la langue de la minorité au Québec et partout au Canada. L'ACSAQ, et les membres de la CSEM, ont réussi à obtenir une déclaration d'inconstitutionnalité d'un certain nombre d'exigences. LA CHORALE : Vous aimez chanter? Faites partie de la chorale de la CSEM! Les élèves de la 4e à la 5e secondaire passionnés par le chant sont invités à auditionner pour la Chorale, qui en est à sa 44e saison! Partagez votre passion pour la musique avec une chorale primée! En effet, elle offre une formation musicale exceptionnelle et des occasions de développer sa voix, d'améliorer ses compétences linguistiques et auditives, sa mémoire, sa détermination et sa confiance en soi, d'interpréter les meilleures classiques, contemporaines et multiculturelles, de travailler avec des musiciens professionnels, de se produire dans les plus grandes salles de concert de Montréal, de participer à des camps musicaux et à des tournées et de se faire de nouveaux amis qui partagent la même passion pour la musique. Vous pouvez auditionner lors d'une répétition du samedi matin (les 9, 16, 23 ou 30 septembre) à l'école Royal Vale à NDG. DE RETOUR DE LA C.-B: Après trois années de report, la chorale de la CSEM a été ravie de participer à l’International Choral Kathaumixw Festival (Festival international de la chorale Kathawumixw) à Powell River, en Colombie Britannique, pendant la première semaine de juillet. C'est la deuxième chorale québécoise à être invitée en 40 ans d'histoire du festival. Avec un programme de musique et de compositeurs principalement québécois, la chorale a également eu l'occasion d'entendre de nombreuses autres merveilleuses chorales d'adultes et de jeunes de toute l'Amérique du Nord, d'apprendre un nouveau répertoire, de chanter et de sympathiser avec les 1 200 autres choristes. Par ailleurs, le temps était splendide et les paysages de la côte ensoleillée de la Colombie-Britannique étaient à couper le souffle. La chorale a également été ravie de recevoir la visite de Nicholas Simons, membre de l'assemblée législative de la Colombie-Britannique pour la région de Sunshine Coast-Powell River. M. Simons, originaire de Montréal, est membre de la famille Simons, connue pour son Centre musical CAMMAC, où le personnel de la chorale enseigne depuis des années. La chorale entamera sa 44e saison le samedi 9 septembre et se réjouit d'accueillir de nouveaux membres. Les élèves de la 4e à la 5e année secondaire sont admissibles. Outre les concerts de décembre et de mai, la chorale senior (élèves du secondaire) s'apprête à participer à des projets communs passionnants, notamment en interprétant Carmina Burana avec les chœurs de l'université McGill et en se produisant avec l'Arion Baroque Orchestra à la salle Bourgie. À partir du 16 septembre, Pat Abbott, chef de la chorale de la CSEM, animera une émission de radio hebdomadaire sur la musique chorale à Radio Ville-Marie (91,3 à Montréal), une station de radio en français qui propose des programmes sur des sujets d'ordre humain, social, culturel et spirituel. L'émission sera diffusée le samedi à 19 h et le dimanche à 7 h. Radio VM diffuse aussi à Sherbrooke, Trois-Rivières, Victoriaville et Rimouski, ainsi que sur le Web.
FOIRE DE L'ÉDUCATION ET DES CARRIÈRES: Plus de 2 000 élèves de 5e secondaire prendront part à la 23e édition annuelle de la Foire des carrières de la Commission scolaire English Montréal, les mercredi 25 et jeudi 26 octobre, au Centre des carrières St-Pius X, à Ahuntsic (9955, rue Papineau). Jack Dym, de Pipe and Piling Supplies Ltd, est le commanditaire en titre de l'événement. Plusieurs personnalités des médias seront sur place pour renseigner les élèves sur les carrières dans ce domaine et agiront à titre de maîtres de cérémonie.
Le 25 octobre, de 18 h à 20 h, la Foire de l'éducation et des carrières ouvrira ses portes au grand public. Les organisateurs soulignent qu'il s'agit d'une excellente occasion pour les parents et les élèves (3e, 4e et 5e secondaire) de se renseigner sous un même toit sur les diverses options postsecondaires offertes. L'entrée et le stationnement sont gratuits. Mario Argiropoulos du Service de l'éducation des adultes et de la formation professionnelle (EAFP) de la CSEM présidera la Foire de l'éducation et des carrières. L’EAFP Coordonnera l'événement en collaboration avec les Services aux élèves de la CSEM, cette Foire vise principalement à sensibiliser les élèves aux nombreux programmes d’enseignement qui s’offrent à eux. Tous les élèves assisteront à une brève séance d'information générale dans l'auditorium de St. Pius X. Ils auront ensuite la possibilité de visiter les divers kiosques d'information/d'exposition afin de s’entretenir avec des représentants d’établissements anglophones, notamment des centres de formation professionnelle, des cégeps, des universités et quelques écoles de gestion privées.
THE SUBURBAN: Les organes de presse en provenance du Canada sont dorénavant, comme vous le savez peut-être, totalement bloqués sur Facebook et Instagram, en réponse à la Loi sur les nouvelles en ligne adoptée par le gouvernement canadien. Des mesures similaires sont prévues par Google. À Montréal, le groupe Métro Média a annoncé récemment qu'il suspendait les activités de ses journaux hebdomadaires, dont la grande majorité dessert des communautés où se trouvent nos écoles. Le journal The Suburban a acquis la distinction d'être le plus grand journal hebdomadaire anglophone du Québec au cours des 60 dernières années. L'ÉDUCATION SUR L'HOLOCAUSTE : La CSEM a obtenu l'année dernière une subvention Nova de la Fondation communautaire juive de Montréal pour entreprendre un programme d'éducation sur l'Holocauste. Grâce à ce financement, plusieurs voyages scolaires ont pu être organisés au Musée de l’Holocauste de Montréal, avec comme invités conférenciers des survivants. De plus, un certain nombre de programmes scolaires ont pu être mis en place. Cette année encore, grâce à la générosité de certains donateurs, la CSEM sera en mesure d'organiser un programme. Parmi les plus notables, le jeune homme d'affaires montréalais Henry Zavriyev a fait un don spécial pour cinq écoles secondaires du secteur East : Laurier Macdonald, Lester B. Pearson, Rosemont, Vincent Massey et John F. Kennedy.

PROTECTEUR NATIONAL DE L'ÉLÈVE : Depuis le 28 août, un nouveau mécanisme de traitement des plaintes en milieu scolaire est en vigueur dans l'ensemble du Québec. Ce nouveau processus sera appliqué uniformément partout sur le territoire québécois et remplacera les procédures d'examen des plaintes en vigueur. Nouvelle institution autonome externe au réseau scolaire, le protecteur national de l'élève sera responsable de l'application de ce nouveau processus simplifié de traitement des plaintes. Le protecteur national de l'élève mènera une enquête neutre, dans le respect des protocoles établis, en vue d'assurer le respect des droits des élèves et de leurs parents. Le mandat du protecteur national de l'élève couvre non seulement l'éducation préscolaire, primaire et secondaire tant dans le secteur public que privé, mais aussi l'enseignement à la maison, la formation professionnelle et l'éducation des adultes. PROJETS D'ÉCOLE SPÉCIALISÉE: Une consultation d'une durée d'un an est lancée pour l'ouverture d'une nouvelle école spécialisée dans l'édifice de l’école Nesbitt, à Rosemont. La période de consultation prendra fin le 20 juin 2024. Des réunions extraordinaires du conseil seront prévues à l'automne 2024 et les partenaires consultés pourront alors partager les points saillants de leurs mémoires avant qu'une décision finale ne soit prise par le conseil des commissaires. Cette proposition est née des besoins d'une population croissante d'élèves ayant des besoins particuliers au sein de la CSEM depuis plusieurs années. Au cours des six dernières années, la CSEM a ouvert de multiples classes multidisciplinaires, dont SEEDS, WINGS, Stimulation précoce, Roots et Welcoming, afin de répondre aux besoins particuliers des élèves.
LES GARÇONS EXPOSÉS AU RISQUE DE SEXTORSION (REPORTAGE DE CTV) : Les experts tirent la sonnette d'alarme devant l'augmentation des menaces proférées à l'encontre d'enfants au moyen d'images à caractère sexuel, une tactique connue sous le nom de « sextorsion ». « Je dirais que les jeunes de 15 à 17 ans sont le plus souvent visés. Mais depuis quelques mois, nous voyons des enfants de plus en plus jeunes ciblés pour la sextorsion », déclare Signy Arnason, directrice générale adjointe au Centre canadien de protection de l'enfance (CCPE). Dans 20 % des cas, il s'agit d'enfants de 13 ans ou moins. La ligne de signalement du Canada pour l'exploitation sexuelle des enfants en ligne, Cyberaide.ca, reçoit aujourd'hui en moyenne 10 signalements de sextorsion par jour. Dans 91 % des cas, les victimes sont de sexe masculin. À l'approche de la rentrée scolaire, la CSEM se dit consciente du problème et a adapté son programme d'études en matière d'éducation sexuelle. La CSEM s'est associée à des organisations telles que le Centre canadien de protection de l'enfance et Love Quebec pour élaborer des plans de cours sur la sécurité en ligne et hors ligne. « Il s'agit d'enseigner aux enfants comment être en sécurité et que les contenus que vous mettez en ligne ne vous appartiennent plus. Plus nous les éduquons, plus nous espérons qu'ils feront de meilleurs choix, en toute connaissance de cause, lorsqu'ils seront plus âgés », explique Jamie Quinn, conseiller pédagogique à la CSEM.
SERVICES DE L'ÉDUCATION DES ADULTES
ET DE LA FORMATION PROFESSIONNELLE
SHADD PREND PART À LA COURSE DE BATEAUX DRAGONS : Une équipe du Centre de santé et d'études commerciales Shadd de NDG participera à la Course de bateaux-dragons CanSupport des Cèdres BDO le samedi 9 septembre (de 8 h à 14 h) à Promenade Père-Marquette (2105, boulevard Saint-Joseph), à Lachine. D'autres activités se dérouleront tout au long de la journée destinées aux familles telles que la Zumba, le Yoga ainsi que d'autres animations.
Cet événement est essentiel pour sensibiliser le public et collecter des fonds indispensables pour le programme CanSupport des Cèdres, qui a apporté et continue d'apporter un soutien psychologique, émotionnel, concret et financier aux patients atteints de cancer ainsi qu'à leurs familles, à raison d'une personne à la fois, au cours des 30 dernières années. La Fondation du cancer des Cèdres a été créée en 1966 par un groupe de personnes de la communauté libanaise qui ont surmonté une perte personnelle et qui se sont consacrées à la lutte contre le cancer et à son impact sur les patients et leurs familles, toutes origines confondues.
L’engagement de SHAAD se traduit par une volonté de renforcer l'esprit d'équipe et de s'impliquer dans la communauté. Les participants doivent pagayer à l'unisson pour propulser le bateau-dragon dans une série d'épreuves éliminatoires d'une durée d'une minute contre d'autres concurrents. C'est aussi un moyen de faire connaître SHADD, en montrant aux autres qu'il ne s'agit pas seulement d'une école professionnelle couronnée de succès, mais aussi d'un membre actif de la communauté. « Notre force, ce sont nos élèves », explique John Millar, un enseignant. « Le bateau-dragon représente la puissance et la solidarité de nos élèves. Ce sont là l'essence même de SHADD ».
Grâce à une contribution généreuse de 5 000 $, Dominic Aversa, des restaurants Bâton Rouge à Anjou, Laval et Greenfield Park, a donné l'exemple et a encouragé les élèves à participer en faisant des dons. Chaque bateau-dragon a pour objectif d'amasser 15 000 $ en dons. « Nous sommes près du but, mais nous avons besoin de votre soutien », a indiqué le directeur de l'école, Joe Cacchione.

FALL APART: Anna Panunto, une enseignante au Centre d'éducation des adultes HSM, présente une pièce de théâtre intitulée Fall Apart : ça va bien aller les 16 et 17 septembre à la Casa D'Italia au 505 Jean Talon Est. Les événements se déroulent au début de la pandémie de COVID-19 (de mai à juillet 2020) à Montréal. C'était une période incertaine où les masques devaient être désinfectés à l'eau chaude, où les gens étaient confrontés à des pertes d'emploi imprévues, où les mariages volaient en éclats et où les problèmes de santé mentale explosaient. Nous nous sommes tous effondrés à un moment ou à un autre durant cette période de notre histoire. Et pourtant, cette pièce évoque l'espoir …, alors ne vous laissez pas duper par le titre! Anna est enseignante, rédactrice indépendante et artiste plasticienne. Au cours des dernières décennies, elle a publié dans différentes langues de la poésie, des nouvelles romanesques et non romanesques, ainsi que des articles didactiques liés à la pédagogie et à la culture. Cette année, elle a également écrit et produit un court-métrage monologue en italien intitulé Il Diario Di Una Stupida. Il a été présenté à Toronto et à Montréal cette année.
Elle est fière de présenter sa deuxième réalisation théâtrale, cette fois, une histoire semi autobiographique qui se déroule pendant les débuts de la pandémie du virus Covid-19, en plein cœur de Montréal.
Cette pièce est dédiée à Dante Rossi. Son soutien indéfectible à ce projet ne sera jamais oublié.
