FIRST DAY OF CLASS: On Tuesday, September 1 the EMSB marked the first day of classes at Leonardo Da Vinci Academy in RDP. Commissioners Pietro Mercuri, Susan Perrera, Sharon Nelson and Maria Corsi, Director General Nick Katalifos and senior administrators and some local political leadership -Liberal MNA Marc Tanguay, Liberal MP Eric St-Pierre and Montreal City Councillor Giovanni Rapana - were on hand. Stated Principal Nadia Sammarco and Vice-Principal Joseph Carlucci: “At Leonardo da Vinci Academy, we realize the importance of keeping children happy and eager to come to school each and every day because this will ensure their success and perseverance in school, Our enriching educational program focuses on providing our students with bilingual instruction with additional emphasis on numeracy, technology and music. We strongly believe in the partnership between teachers, staff, parents and community. The famous quote, ‘It Takes a Village to Raise a Child,’ holds true. Only through the collaborative efforts of all partners, will our students truly succeed.”

ASISTA SERVICE DOGS: Some EMSB schools are once again benefitting from the presence of service dogs provided by the Asista Foundation. The objective is to create and sustain therapeutic relationships that help children and adults cope with mental health challenges through the support of qualified service dogs. In addition, these service dogs aim to foster better integration and inclusion for individuals within society. Montreal Canadiens captain Nick Suzuki is the official ambassador for the Asista Foundation. On August 27 he hosted his annual benefit golf tournament. On hand was Flavie, a golden retriever mix that is a trained and certified facility service dog. She is trained through the Asista Foundation and works directly with her handler Myriam Farley to support the students. She attended the golf tournament as an ambassador for the Foundation. The EMSB also has two Asista dogs, Keira and Jessie at Dalkeith Elementary School in Anjou, taken care of by Principal John Wright; Gustav at Rosemount Technology Centre, guided by Assunta (Susie) Munno; and Journey at St. Raphael, handled by Clementina Fraga. This year the Student Services Department has welcomed Nala (@pawsewithNala on Instagram). Handler Samanatha Smith plans to bring her to the six schools she is assigned to as an animator: Westmount High, Willingdon, St. Monica, Hampstead, Elizabeth Ballantyne and Edinburgh.

ALOUETTES BURSARIES: Two EMSB students received $500 bursaries from the Montreal Alouettes prior to their August 20 game at Percival Molson McGill Stadium vs the Ottawa Redblacks. EMSB Chair Joe Ortona was on hand for the presentation, lauding the achievements of Alex Manitt from Westmount High School and Stéphontay Dobson from Gerald McShane Elementary School in Montreal North. “We sincerely thank the Alouettes organization for recognizing our students this way,” stated Mr. Ortona. “They are prime examples of why we boast the largest success rate of any public school board in the province.” You can read the press release here.

SCHOOL BAGS FOR KIDS: The Hon. Marjorie Michel, Liberal Member of Parliament for Papineau and Federal Minister of Health, visited Sinclair Laird Elementary School in Park Extension before classes began to present 10 school bags donated by TELUS, complete with some supplies and stuffed annimals. Student Eaman Shad was on hand to receive the first bag in the company of Commissioner Paula Killian, Principal Patricia Tumillo, support animal Seko the canine, Assistant Director General Pela Nickoletoppoulos and Regional Director Darlene Kehayayan.

EMMA RISES TO THE CHALLENGE: Emma Cavanagh-Themelis, a Secondary V student at Royal Vale School in NDG, has been participating in the Great Cycle Challenge where you bike kilometers and raise money for children’s cancer. In August Emma cycled 400 km and raised over $700. Here is the link to her page.
BUDGETARY CONCERNS: EMSB Chair Joe Ortona wrote this blog, expressing concern over how the present CAQ government has backed the EMSB into a corner where budgetary matters are concerned. The EMSB will adopt its 2026-27 budget on September 23.

EDUCATION AND CAREER FAIR: The 2026 EMSB Education and Career Fair Open House will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 21 (3:30 pm to 8:30 pm) at the St. Pius X Career Centre in Ahuntsic, located at 9955 Papineau Blvd. North. We strongly recommend that students presently in Grades 9, 10 and 11 take advantage of this opportunity with their parents for a one-stop shop experience regarding post-secondary education opportunities at CEGEPs, private business colleges and vocational centres.
Universities will also be represented in the kiosk area. At previous events of this kind, parents have really appreciated having all of these options under one roof. It really helped them better plan for the individual open houses. There is no admission charge and parking is free in the rear lot off Sauriol Avenue. MAKE-A-WISH: Towards the end of the last school year, East Hill Elementary School in RDP welcomed Kathy Vella and Jessie Lodico from the Make-A-Wish Foundation as they proudly presented the final amount raised by the school community: $4,093.25! This incredible achievement was made possible through the generosity and dedication of students, staff, and families. As part of this special occasion, students received Make-A-Wish t-shirts and had the privilege of hearing a mom share her son’s inspiring Make-A-Wish journey. Her heartfelt story reminded us all of the hope, joy, and strength that a wish can bring to a child and their family.

BOOK ANNOUNCEMENT: Anna Maria Rubinato De Vito has just retired as a French teacher at Gardenview Elementary School in St. Laurent after more than 35 years of service. And what a nice gift she received from her daughter Eleeza. She wrote and published a children's book inspired by mom’s teaching philosophy and the people who are dear to her. It carries a great fundamental message for all! The book, Madame Anna Maria's Magic, is available here on Amazon, and all proceeds are donated to sick children. Anna Maria’s children attended EMSB schools throughout their elementary and hgh school education (Gerald McShane and LaurenHill Academy). As for the book, on his very first day of Grade 1, Marco hears whispers about Madame Anna Maria. Glitter begins appearing in unexpected places. Strange things begin to happen. THE VALIQUETTE FOUNDATION: The Valiquette Foundation, under the wings of Jake Valiquette, has long been a strong supporter of the EMSB. Over the summer Camp Valiquette welcomed many EMSB students as campers and counsellors. For more than a decade, the Valiquette Foundation has been helping children succeed through academics, camps, youth success, and community outreach throughout Côte-des-Neiges and the surrounding boroughs. The Foundation is proud to be members of the Côte-des-Neiges Youth Table and the NDG Community Council. Its office is located directly across the street from Coronation Elementary School and for camp and academic year tutoring programs, it has welcomed students from Coronation, Carlyle, Elizabeth Ballantyne,Westmount Park, Willingdon, Marymount Academy International, Royal Vale and Westmount High.

FORMER NAVY COMMANDER SHARES MESSAGE: EMSB administrators were enthralled to hear from Chris Sutherland at an August professional development workshop. He is the former Deputy Commander of the Royal Canadian Navy, who retired in 2025 after 37 years of service to the military. Mr. Sutherland spoke frankly about his battles with addiction, depression and mental health. He delivered an inspirational, impactful and experience-based presentation on leadership, ethics, culture and his journey in recovery from “rock bottom” to the strategic level in the military as an Admiral. Given his vast experience in the military, he has many lessons to share in providing human resources support to large organizations and in leading culture change. “I’m a recovering addict, and I’ve struggled with mental illness, specifically depression,” he said, noting that at its peak his addiction meant he might consume a full 26-ounce bottle of gin in a sitting. “After 74 days at sea (in post-9/11 operations in the Middle East), I tried suicide. I think one of the most courageous acts anyone struggling with mental illness can do, is to reach out for help.”

GEMSTAR WINNERS: The EMSB was proud to be part of the GemStar Circle of Excellence Scholarship and Mentorship Program celebration of another remarkable milestone recently, as more than 100 guests gathered to honor the achievements of the program’s fourth cohort of outstanding students. Sponsors, parents, school board officials, mentors, family members, friends, and community leaders filled the hall to celebrate the accomplishments of the 15 GemStars who successfully completed the 2025-2026 program. During the evening, a total of $22,500 in scholarships was awarded to these exceptional young leaders, recognizing their academic excellence, leadership, and commitment to their communities. Seven EMSB students were presented with scholarships: Sarah-Jane Bonnefond, Nikolaï Konieczny and Revin Otchere, Royal Vale High School; Sebastian Cedrick Napoleon, Royal West Academy; Anoushka Mabika, Westmount High School; and Joel Loko, John F. Kennedy High School. Anthony Jamal Coleman of LaurenHill Academy was chosen as Valedictorian and he delivered an exceptionally heartfelt speech that touched the hearts of everyone in attendance. The EMSB was represented by Commissioner Sharon Nelson, Director of Human Resources Ann Watson and some school principals.
DENTAL SERVICES: Dr. Irwin Fried, Division Director of Pediatric Dentistry at McGill University, Faculty of Dental Medicine and Oral Health Sciences, is reaching out to let families know of a program where they offer free and/or reduced cost dentistry to children aged seven to 17. As Dr. Fried notes, cavities are still the number one disease in the world. Access to dental care is still very difficult even with RAMQ and the new Canadian Dental Care Plan covering some of the costs. Many families, especially those new to Canada, do not know where to go for treatment and are intimidated to navigate the system. “We have been running this program for over 50 years,” he said. “We offer dental treatments to children and adolescents, provided by fourth year dental students who are supervised by Pediatric Dental Specialists and General Dentists who routinely treat children." QUEBEC ELECTION: The EMSB has embarked upon a campaign to meet with candidates in the upcoming Quebec election, specifically those seeking office in ridings where adult education and vocational service centres are located. That is because of a pledge by the CAQ to apply Bill 101 to the adult sector of English school boards, a move that would be devastating for the boards, the Quebec economy and the manpower shortage. On Wednesday, Chair Ortona and Commissioner Susan Perera met with PQ candidate for the Maurice Richard riding Aisha Issa. They welcomed her to St. Pius X Career Centre and Culinary Institute. Vice-Principal Alain Belair provided a tour of the facility. Later, Mr. Ortona provided a comprehensive overview about the issues of concern. More such meetings are planned in the coming days and weeks.

PREMIÈRE JOURNÉE DE CLASSE : Mardi 1er septembre, la CSEM a souligné la rentrée scolaire à l’Académie Leonardo Da Vinci, à Rivière-des-Prairies. Pour l’occasion, plusieurs commissaires, des membres de la haute direction et des représentants de la classe politique locale étaient présents. La directrice, Nadia Sammarco, et le directeur adjoint, Joseph Carlucci, ont déclaré : « À l’Académie Leonardo Da Vinci, nous sommes conscients de l'importance de veiller à ce que les enfants soient heureux et aient envie de venir à l’école chaque jour, car c’est ce qui garantira leur réussite et leur persévérance scolaires. Notre programme scolaire enrichi met l’accent sur un enseignement bilingue, tout en accordant une attention particulière à la numératie, à la technologie et à la musique. Nous croyons fermement à la collaboration entre les enseignants, le personnel, les parents et la communauté. Le célèbre proverbe selon lequel il faut tout un village pour élever un enfant demeure tout à fait pertinent. Ce n’est que grâce aux efforts concertés de tous nos partenaires que nos élèves pourront véritablement réussir. »
CHIENS D'ASSISTANCE ASISTA : Certaines écoles de la CSEM bénéficient de nouveau de la présence de chiens d’assistance fournis par la Fondation ASISTA. L’objectif est de créer et de maintenir des relations thérapeutiques qui aident les enfants et les adultes à surmonter les défis liés à la santé mentale grâce au soutien de chiens d’assistance spécialement entraînés. De plus, ces chiens visent à favoriser une meilleure intégration et inclusion des personnes au sein de la société. Le capitaine des Canadiens de Montréal, Nick Suzuki, est l’ambassadeur officiel de la Fondation ASISTA. Le 27 août, il a animé son Tournoi de golf-bénéfice annuel. Parmi les invités se trouvait Flavie, une chienne croisée golden retriever formée et certifiée comme chienne d’assistance d’établissement. Elle est formée par la Fondation ASISTA (asista.ca) et travaille directement avec sa responsable, Myriam Farley, coordonnatrice à la vie étudiante à l’école secondaire L.I.N.K.S., afin de soutenir les élèves. Elle a participé au tournoi de golf à titre d’ambassadrice de la Fondation. La CSEM compte également deux chiens de la Fondation ASISTA à l’école primaire Dalkeith, dans l’arrondissement d’Anjou.
BOURSES DES ALOUETTES : Deux
élèves de la Commission scolaire English-Montréal (CSEM) se sont vu remettre
une bourse de 500 $ chacun, offerte par les Alouettes de Montréal avant le
match du 20 août opposant les Alouettes aux Redblacks d’Ottawa au stade
Percival‑Molson de l’Université McGill. Le président de la CSEM, Joe Ortona,
était présent lors de la remise des bourses et a salué les réalisations d’Alex
Manitt, de l’école secondaire Westmount, et de Stéphontay Dobson, de l’école
primaire Gerald McShane, à Montréal-Nord. « Nous remercions sincèrement
les Alouettes de Montréal de reconnaître nos élèves de cette façon », a
déclaré M. Ortona. « Ils sont de parfaits exemples de la réussite de nos élèves
et témoignent du taux de réussite exceptionnel de la CSEM, le plus élevé parmi

FOIRE DE L'ÉDUCATION ET DES CARRIÈRES
: La journée portes ouvertes de la Foire de l'éducation et des carrières de la
CSEM 2026 aura lieu le mercredi 21 octobre, de 16 h 30 à 20 h 30, au
Centre de carrières St. Pius X, situé au 9955, boulevard Papineau Nord, dans
Ahuntsic. Nous recommandons fortement aux élèves actuellement inscrits en 3e,
4e et 5e secondaire de profiter de cette occasion avec
leurs parents. Ils pourront découvrir, en un seul endroit, les diverses options
d'études postsecondaires offertes par les cégeps, les collèges privés et les
centres de formation professionnelle. Des universités seront également
représentées dans l'espace des kiosques. Lors des éditions précédentes, les
parents ont grandement apprécié pouvoir explorer toutes ces options sous un
même toit. Cette formule les a aidés à mieux planifier leurs visites aux
différentes journées portes ouvertes. L'entrée est gratuite et le stationnement
est offert sans frais dans le stationnement arrière accessible par l'avenue
Sauriol. L'établissement bénéficie d'un emplacement central, facilement

DE LA CITOYENNETÉ NUMÉRIQUE : La Journée de la citoyenneté
numérique est de retour le 28 octobre 2026, dans le cadre de la Semaine
canadienne de l'éducation aux médias. C'est l'occasion pour chacun de réfléchir
à la façon dont nous partageons du contenu, réagissons aux publications et
participons aux échanges en ligne. Cette année, joignez-vous à la conversation
en partageant une façon concrète dont vous contribuez à rendre les espaces
numériques plus positifs, respectueux et bien informés. Qu'il s'agisse de
prendre le temps de réfléchir avant de partager un contenu, de vérifier une
source, d'offrir du soutien à une personne en ligne ou de dénoncer la
désinformation, chaque geste contribue à bâtir un meilleur monde numérique.
Faites passer le message sur les médias sociaux en utilisant le mot : #DigitalCitizenDay le 28 octobre afin de contribuer à améliorer
nos espaces en ligne!
RÊVE D’ENFANT : Vers la fin de la dernière année scolaire, l’école primaire East Hill, à Rivière‑des-Prairies (RDP), a accueilli Kathy Vella et Jessie Lodico de la Fondation Rêves d’enfants, qui ont fièrement annoncé le montant final amassé par la communauté scolaire : 4 093,25 $! Cette réalisation remarquable a été rendue possible grâce à la générosité et à l’engagement des élèves, des membres du personnel et des familles. À l'occasion de cet événement spécial, les élèves ont reçu des t-shirts de la Fondation Rêves d’enfants et ont eu le privilège d’entendre le témoignage d’une mère relatant le parcours inspirant de son fils avec la Fondation. Son histoire touchante a rappelé à tous l’espoir, la joie et la force qu’un rêve réalisé peut apporter à un enfant et à sa famille.
CANADON : La CSEM
ainsi que toutes ses écoles disposent désormais de leur propre page de dons sur
CanaDon. Cette plateforme offre un moyen simple et sécuritaire de faire un don
afin de soutenir la CSEM et ses établissements scolaires en contribuant à des
projets et à des besoins qui ne sont pas couverts par les budgets réguliers. N'hésitez
pas à y jeter un coup d'œil et à nous apporter votre soutien.

IDENTITÉ QUÉBÉCOISE : Deux
mots reviennent constamment dans le discours politique au Québec : identité
québécoise ou, en anglais, Quebec identity. Mais qu'est-ce que cela
signifie exactement? Qui la définit? À l'approche des élections provinciales du
5 octobre, Sudha Krishnan a donné la parole à des Québécoises et des Québécois
de tous horizons, qui ont offert une riche diversité de perspectives. Une
nouvelle série de CBC News présente des conversations franches et subtiles
animées par Mme Krishnan. La commissaire de la CSEM représentant
Ahuntsic et Montréal-Nord, Susan Perera, figure parmi les personnes

LA FONDATION VALIQUETTE : : Depuis de nombreuses années, la Fondation Valiquette est un précieux partenaire de la CSEM. Au cours de l’été, le Camp Valiquette a accueilli de nombreux élèves de la CSEM en tant que campeurs et moniteurs. Depuis plus de dix ans, la fondation aide les jeunes à réussir grâce à des initiatives axées sur la réussite scolaire, les camps, le développement des jeunes et le rayonnement communautaire dans Côte-des-Neiges et les arrondissements avoisinants. La fondation est fière d’être membre de la Table de concertation jeunesse de Notre‑Dame-de-Grâce (NDG) et du conseil communautaire de NDG. Ses bureaux sont situés directement en face de l’école primaire Coronation. Dans le cadre de ses camps et de ses programmes de tutorat durant l’année scolaire, elle a accueilli des élèves des écoles primaires Coronation, Carlyle, Elizabeth Ballantyne, Westmount Park et Willingdon, de l’Académie internationale Marymount, de l’école Royal Vale et de l’école secondaire Westmount. CHRIS SUTHERLAND : Les directions de la CSEM ont été captivées par la présentation de Chris Sutherland lors d’un atelier de perfectionnement professionnel tenu en août. Ancien commandant adjoint de la Marine royale canadienne, M. Sutherland a pris sa retraite en 2025 après 37 années de service au sein des Forces armées canadiennes. Il a parlé avec franchise de ses luttes contre la dépendance, la dépression et les problèmes de santé mentale. Il a offert une présentation inspirante, marquante et fondée sur son expérience portant sur le leadership, l’éthique, la culture en milieu de travail et son parcours de rétablissement, depuis le « fond du gouffre » jusqu’aux plus hauts échelons stratégiques de l’institution militaire, où il a atteint le grade d’amiral. Fort de sa vaste expérience militaire, il a également partagé de nombreuses leçons sur la gestion des ressources humaines au sein de grandes organisations et sur la conduite du changement organisationnel. « Je suis un dépendant en rétablissement et j’ai vécu avec une maladie mentale, plus particulièrement la dépression », a-t-il déclaré, précisant qu’au plus fort de sa dépendance, il pouvait consommer à lui seul une bouteille complète de gin de 26 onces. « Après 74 jours en mer (dans le cadre d’opérations menées au Moyen-Orient à la suite des attentats du 11 septembre), j’ai fait une tentative de suicide. Je crois que l’un des gestes les plus courageux qu’une personne aux prises avec des problèmes de santé mentale puisse poser est de demander de l’aide. »
GEMSTAR
: La CSEM était fière de participer récemment à la célébration d’une autre
étape marquante du programme de bourses et de mentorat GemStar Circle of
Excellence (Cercle d’excellence GemStar), alors que plus de 100 invités se
sont réunis pour souligner les réalisations de la quatrième cohorte d’élèves
exceptionnels du programme. Les commanditaires, les parents, les représentants
de la commission scolaire, les mentors, les membres de la famille, les amis et
les leaders communautaires ont rempli la salle afin de célébrer les
réalisations des 15 GemStars ayant complété avec succès le programme 2025-2026.
Au cours de la soirée, un total de 22 500 $ en bourses a été remis à ces jeunes
leaders exceptionnels, en reconnaissance de leur excellence scolaire, de leur
leadership et de leur engagement envers leur communauté. Sept élèves de la CSEM
ont reçu des bourses : Sarah-Jane Bonnefond, Nikolaï Konieczny et Revin
Otchere, de l’école secondaire Royal Vale; Sebastian Cedrick Napoleon, de
l’Académie Royal West; Anoushka Mabika, de l’école secondaire Westmount; et
Joel Loko, de l’école secondaire John F. Kennedy. Anthony Jamal Coleman, de
l’Académie LaurenHill, a été choisi comme major de promotion et a livré un
discours exceptionnellement émouvant qui a touché le cœur de toutes les
personnes présentes. La CSEM était représentée par la commissaire Sharon
Nelson, la directrice des ressources humaines Ann Watson, ainsi que par
plusieurs directions d’établissement scolaire.
SERVICES DENTAIRES : Le Dr Irwin Fried, directeur de la Division de dentisterie pédiatrique de la Faculté de médecine dentaire et des sciences de la santé orale de l’Université McGill, souhaite informer les familles de l’existence d’un programme offrant des soins dentaires gratuits ou à coût réduit aux enfants âgés de 7 à 17 ans. Comme le souligne le Dr Fried, la carie dentaire demeure la maladie la plus répandue dans le monde. Malgré la couverture offerte par la RAMQ et le nouveau Régime canadien de soins dentaires, l’accès aux soins dentaires demeure difficile pour de nombreuses familles. Les familles nouvellement arrivées au Canada, en particulier, ne savent pas toujours où s’adresser pour obtenir des traitements et peuvent se sentir intimidées lorsqu’elles doivent s’orienter dans le système. « Nous offrons ce programme depuis plus de 50 ans », explique le Dr Fried. « Nous proposons des traitements dentaires aux enfants et aux adolescents. Ces soins sont prodigués par des étudiantes et étudiants de quatrième année en médecine dentaire, sous la supervision de spécialistes en dentisterie pédiatrique et de dentistes généralistes qui traitent régulièrement de jeunes patients. » Les cliniques se tiendront les mercredis matin, à compter de septembre 2026, au 2001, avenue McGill College, bureau 100.
